Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has presented relief items to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Accra Central Market, as part of government efforts to support victims and aid their recovery.

The items donated included 30 cartons of cooking oil, 300 mosquito nets, two bales of used clothing, 300 blankets, and 100 mattresses to assist traders who suffered losses in the devastating blaze.

During a visit to the market on Friday, June 5, the Vice President inspected the extent of destruction caused by the fire and interacted with affected traders. She also called for an immediate structural assessment of the affected building to determine its safety and guide subsequent recovery efforts.

As part of the relief intervention, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) overseeing the relief process to prioritise locally manufactured products when procuring items for victims.

The fire, which broke out on the night of Wednesday, June 3, destroyed several stalls within the market and reportedly left a firefighter injured while battling the flames.

Some of the affected traders expressed gratitude to the Vice President and the government for the support, describing the donation as timely assistance during a difficult period.

“We appreciate your support and concern for us. This gesture will go a long way in helping us recover. May God bless and protect you,” one of the beneficiaries said.
