The Senior Staff Association of Ghana, together with the Technical University Administrators Association and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association, has declared an indefinite strike effective Wednesday, May 21.
The unions accuse both the current and previous governments of failing to honour a six-month-old agreement aimed at improving their conditions of service.
Until their demands are met, the leadership has instructed members to stay home.
George Ansong, National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Ghana, described the strike as a last resort after unsuccessful dialogue with government officials.
“The Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUWAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG) announce, with deep regret but unwavering resolve, our decision to embark on an indefinite strike action,” Mr. Ansong said.
He acknowledged that the decision was difficult but necessary, emphasizing that “countless engagements and goodwill efforts extended to the government” had been met with “persistent inaction, neglect, and blatant failure” to honour the terms of a duly signed agreement from six months ago.
According to Mr. Ansong, despite multiple rounds of dialogue, repeated reminders, and granted extensions, the government has failed to deliver on its promises, eroding trust and undermining cooperation between the parties.
“The government has continuously reneged on its commitment, thereby undermining the trust and cooperation that should exist between both parties,” he added.
