The Fisheries Enforcement Unit (FEU) has arrested two inshore fishing operators at the Tema Fishing Harbour for allegedly operating without valid fishing licences and using unapproved fishing gear.
The operation, led by the Coordinator of the Fisheries Enforcement Unit, Faustina Anokye Boakye, is part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities in Ghana’s waters.
The suspects were subsequently handed over to the Tema Police for further investigations and possible prosecution.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the arrests underscore the government’s commitment to enforcing fisheries regulations and protecting the country’s marine resources from unsustainable exploitation.
The Ministry commended the Fisheries Enforcement Unit for its vigilance and swift response, stressing that effective enforcement remains essential to safeguarding fish stocks and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector.
Officials noted that illegal fishing practices continue to threaten livelihoods in coastal communities and undermine efforts to preserve Ghana’s fisheries resources for future generations.
The Ministry has therefore urged all fishing operators to comply with fisheries regulations by obtaining the necessary licences and using only approved fishing gear.
Authorities say enforcement operations will continue across the country’s fishing harbours and coastal communities as part of measures to promote responsible fishing practices and strengthen compliance within the industry.
