A 55-year-old transport operator, Hamisu Ibrahim, has been hauled before the Asokwa Circuit Court for the abetment of a crime threatening the life of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

Police prosecutors say the accused person’s actions are contrary to sections 20(1) and 74 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

ASP Stephen Ofori told the court there is an ongoing dispute between the complainant, Sumaila Boakye Mohammed, who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and some members of the union, including the accused, Ibrahim Hamisu.

This internal conflict, according to police, has resulted in civil litigation currently pending before the High Court in Kumasi.

The complainant reported to the Police Regional Criminal Investigations Department in Kumasi that he had been targeted for harassment and intimidation.

On March 27, 2026, the complainant alleged, while at the court premises for a hearing, he observed the accused in the company of four unidentified individuals.

On April 1, 2026, one of those individuals, identified as Mubarak Suleman, allegedly approached the complainant and confessed to the complainant that he and three others had been contracted by Ibrahim Hamisu to intimidate and threaten the regional chairman into abandoning the pending civil suit.

According to the facts made available to the court, Suleman claimed that the group opted not to attack the complainant on the day they were spotted at the court, citing the complainant’s presence at the premises as the reason for their hesitation.

ASP Ofori told the court presided over by her Honour Vida Achia Yeboah that police arrested Ibrahim for investigation following the report.

The accused person, in his cautioning statement provided in the presence of an independent witness, admitted to hiring Suleman and the three other men.

Ibrahim Hamisu, however, claimed the individuals were hired for the purpose of providing surety for a GPRTU member and not to carry out threats on the Ashanti regional chairman of GPRTU.

The court at its hearing on Monday, June 1, 2026, granted bail to the accused person in the sum of GH50,000 with two sureties.

The court also ordered both sureties and the accused person to deposit their identification cards with the court, while Ibrahim Hamisu reports twice every month to the police.

The case has been adjourned to June 23, 2026.
