Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover has raised concerns over the demolition of structures within the Laboma enclave of the Kpeshie Lagoon, warning that the exercise could have far-reaching economic and social consequences.
The demolitions, carried out on Sunday, September 13, formed part of government’s efforts to reclaim waterways and address persistent flooding in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
However, Mr Glover believes authorities should have explored alternative technical solutions before resorting to demolition, particularly where significant private investments and livelihoods are involved.
He said the destruction of resorts and other businesses along Laboma Beach could result in job losses and wipe away years of investment by individuals and businesses.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, the former minister urged the government to adopt a more compassionate approach in dealing with affected businesses and residents.
“Let’s look at these things with a human face. Government cannot provide jobs. There are a lot of people who are asking for jobs. They are knocking on the doors of politicians every day. Look at the youth and the number of graduates who are churned out every year.”
He said the limited opportunities available within the public sector make private businesses and investments critical to providing employment for the growing number of young people.
“They can’t find space in government jobs, and so if people have invested in these things, and so if the only thing we can do is to demolish, we have a problem.”
Mr Glover, however, clarified that his concerns do not amount to opposition to government’s efforts to reclaim waterways.
“I will support the government where people have deliberately built on waterways.”
He maintained that while structures that obstruct waterways must be addressed to protect communities from flooding, the government should also consider the economic impact of demolitions on legitimate businesses and the people whose livelihoods depend on them.
