The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the abduction of a 30-year-old man, Bismark Amoh, over alleged mobile money fraud and is pursuing two others, including a soldier who is currently outside the country.
The Central North Police Commander, DCOP Abraham Acquaye, gave details of the operation on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.
According to him, Bismark’s family reported the case on 8 September, and the police immediately informed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who directed the formation of a technical team.
The personnel, he explained, were drawn from the CID, the Police Intelligence Department (PID), and the Cybercrime Unit within the Central North Command.
Additional personnel were also brought in from Kumasi to support the investigation.
“The team traced the suspects over a period of three to four days. At some point, the captors realised that the police were closing in and attempted to dispose of the victim. Officers intercepted a vehicle linked to the group,” he said.
Although police had identified their location, the suspects had already moved by the time officers arrived. The team eventually arrested them on 13 September and began interrogations.
DCOP Acquaye said investigators suspect the MoMO fraud victim’s husband may have been involved in the crime.
“We suspect that the husband may be involved. He is a soldier and out of the country. We believe there was a conspiracy because he may have contributed to the torture,” the commander said.
With four suspects already in custody, the police are now pursuing two others, bringing the total number of persons of interest in the case to seven, including the soldier.
A teacher, Mavis Badu, and three others are under investigation for allegedly kidnapping a suspected mobile money (MoMo) fraudster in an attempt to recover money lost to fraud.
Reports indicate that the teacher was defrauded of GH¢44,800 from her bank and mobile money accounts.
In an attempt to retrieve the money, a friend of the victim feigned romantic interest in the alleged fraudster and lured him to Kumasi for a meeting.
According to the victim’s sister, Afia Adutwumwaa, the four suspects then seized the alleged fraudster to demand the money.
