Tension briefly flared at Tema Community One, Sites 3 and 8, after the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ebi Bright, moved to halt ongoing construction activities at the site.
The incident is linked to a long-running dispute between residents and TDC Ghana Limited over the use of portions of land in the community.
The Tema MCE, accompanied by members of the Assembly’s task force, visited the site and attempted to stop the construction works, which were being supervised by military and police personnel.
The MCE argued that the Assembly had not issued any permit or granted the necessary regulatory approval for the construction.
The development led to a confrontation between officials of the Assembly and TDC Ghana Limited, but the Tema Regional Police Command intervened to calm tensions and create room for dialogue between the parties.
Speaking after the incident, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ebi Bright, explained the Assembly’s position and reiterated concerns over the construction works.
However, TDC Ghana Limited Managing Director, Courage Nunekpeku, said the situation could have been resolved without the confrontation.
Speaking at a media briefing, Mr Nunekpeku said the Tema Mayor could simply have contacted TDC to seek clarification on the construction rather than going to the site to halt the work.
The latest confrontation has raised fresh questions about the relationship between the two public institutions and whether the dispute could affect the government’s development plans for the area.
For now, work on the project remains suspended, with uncertainty over when construction will resume and how the permit and land-use concerns raised by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly will be resolved.
