The Member of Parliament for the Nkwanta Constituency in the Oti Region, Geoffrey Kini, has urged beneficiaries of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative in Nkwanta South to adopt proper feeding and poultry management practices to ensure the sustainability of the programme.
According to him, the initiative goes beyond job creation, as it is also intended to reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported frozen chicken and eggs.
He explained that the Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative, which forms part of the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, is designed to promote food sovereignty and shared prosperity.
The MP lamented that Ghana spends an estimated $350 million to $400 million annually on imported poultry products, describing the situation as a drain on the country’s foreign exchange and a missed opportunity for local farmers and entrepreneurs.
He said with proper feeding and good poultry management, the initiative could help revive the local poultry sector, which has historically contributed significantly to rural livelihoods and national nutrition.
Mr Kini urged beneficiaries to treat the birds as valuable business assets, follow guidance from agricultural extension officers and adhere to sound poultry management practices.
He said effective management of the initiative would improve household nutrition, generate sustainable income and create more opportunities for women and other vulnerable groups.
The brief launch ceremony, held at Brewaniase and Nkwanta, also marked the beginning of the distribution of the birds to beneficiaries.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Joseph Awal Antwi, commended the government for introducing the intervention and stressed that the selection of beneficiaries was done without political considerations.
“This is a government policy meant to benefit all citizens. The selection of beneficiaries was therefore done on a non-partisan basis,” he emphasised.
He disclosed that the programme would directly benefit 200 households through the distribution of 20,000 broilers and layers.
The MCE encouraged beneficiaries to fully embrace the initiative and build sustainable poultry enterprises, saying its success would improve the availability and affordability of poultry products in Nkwanta South.
He further announced that agricultural extension officers would be deployed across communities to provide technical support and monitor the progress of the beneficiaries.
Some beneficiaries who spoke to Adom News expressed gratitude for the support and pledged to properly care for the birds to help position Nkwanta South as a thriving poultry hub.
