Three major teacher unions have called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to ensure that newly promoted teachers are automatically placed on the appropriate salary scales corresponding to their new ranks.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) made the demand in a joint statement dated Thursday, August 27, 2026.
The unions were reacting to a GES press release dated August 22, 2026, which assured newly promoted teachers of automatic salary adjustments following their promotions.
They welcomed the assurance, noting that it was consistent with the practice since 2020, under which teachers promoted to new ranks are automatically placed on the corresponding salary scales.
“We write to commend the GES on the assurance to place all Newly Promoted Teachers automatically on their respective Grades and Salary Scales/levels as per the said letter, which is in line with the existing practice since 2020,” the unions stated.
However, they warned against any attempt to depart from the existing arrangement or impose a different system without consulting teachers and their unions.
“It must be stated that any attempt to vary the existing practice and forcefully impose same on teachers, with total disregard to the concerns of teachers and their Unions and other related stakeholders will fiercely be resisted with all our strength and might,” they cautioned.
The unions therefore urged the Ministry of Education and GES to ensure that all newly promoted teachers are placed on their appropriate salary scales to reflect their new ranks by August 31, 2026, as promised by the Service.
The statement was signed by GNAT General Secretary Thomas T. Musah, NAGRAT President Jacob Anaba and PRETAG President King Ali Awudu.
The unions stressed that the automatic adjustment is important to ensure that teachers receive salaries commensurate with their newly acquired ranks following promotion.
