The engagement, held in Goaso, was aimed at giving young people an opportunity to identify challenges affecting their peace, safety and participation in national development and propose solutions to address them.

Director of Programmes at the NYA, Archibald Donkor, told Adom News that youth development could not be achieved without paying attention to issues of peace and security.

He explained that the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) had encouraged member states, including Ghana, to develop national action plans to address issues affecting young people in this area.

According to him, the NAP would be developed based on contributions from the youth and other relevant stakeholders, making their participation in the process essential.

Mr Donkor said several factors continue to threaten the peace and security of young people, adding that the action plan would seek to identify and address those challenges.

The Ahafo Regional Director of the NYA, Nicholas Sowah, said the implementation of the action plan could help tackle some of the conditions that push young people into activities that threaten peace and security in their communities and the country.

He commended the youth who participated in the engagement for sharing their experiences and ideas towards developing a comprehensive plan that responds to their needs.

Some participants also welcomed the initiative, saying it was important for policymakers to understand the circumstances that sometimes lead young people to engage in activities that undermine peace and security.

They expressed hope that the concerns and recommendations captured through the engagement would be reflected in the final action plan and implemented by government to improve the welfare and prospects of Ghanaian youth.

The event, held on Sunday, August 30, 2026, combined entertainment, youth engagement and advocacy to deliver a strong message against drug abuse.

It featured music, dance, comedy, skating and biking shows, a food bazaar, youth exhibitions and other activities designed to attract young people while promoting the campaign’s core message: “Red Means Stop.”

Several major celebrities also joined the campaign, using their platforms and influence to encourage young people to reject drugs and other harmful substances.

The campaign’s central message was simple: “Red Means Stop” — urging young people to pause, reconsider risky choices and stay away from activities that could expose them to drug and substance abuse.

The NYA used the entertainment-driven event to demonstrate how music, celebrity influence, creativity and youth participation can be combined with public education to address substance abuse.

Participants were encouraged to channel their energy and talents into productive areas, including education, sports, entrepreneurship, skills development, music and the creative arts.

The event also provided a platform for youth advocates and stakeholders to stress the importance of collective action in tackling substance abuse.

The NYA said parents, schools, religious institutions, community leaders, celebrities and other stakeholders all have a role to play in educating young people about the dangers of drug abuse and supporting them to make responsible choices.

The Authority said it would continue the “Red Means Stop” campaign through public education and youth-focused activities aimed at reducing substance abuse and protecting the future of Ghana’s youth.

The Independence Square event therefore served not only as a celebration of youth talent and creativity but also as a call for collective action, with celebrities and young people taking a stand against drug abuse.

Speaking at the opening of the 2026 National Youth Conference at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi on Tuesday, August 11, Mr Ayariga said the widespread access to smartphones, digital platforms and global networks had given young people unprecedented opportunities to learn, innovate and influence society.

He said young people should therefore move beyond merely consuming content online and use technology to develop businesses, create applications, acquire skills and mobilise communities.

“So don’t use your phone only to watch other people build — use it to build. Don’t only scroll — create. Don’t only complain — contribute,” he said.

Mr Ayariga said the digital age also came with significant responsibilities, particularly regarding the content young people create and share online.

He urged the youth to demonstrate integrity, discipline and respect both online and offline, stressing that technological advancement without responsibility could become destructive.

“Power has to come with responsibility — what are we posting, sharing, creating? What are we saying about our country, and about ourselves?” he asked.

He said the theme of the conference, “Rebuilding Values, Inspiring Patriotism: Empowering the Youth in the Digital Age,” was therefore relevant to the challenges and opportunities confronting the younger generation.

The NYA CEO said young people should not allow themselves to be defined as a problem for society, arguing that their energy, creativity and access to technology could become powerful tools for national transformation.

He urged participants to use the conference to ask difficult questions, share experiences from their communities and engage policymakers constructively, saying young people should recognise that they already had a place in national decision-making.

“You belong at the table. You don’t have to wait until you’re older to matter, until you have a title to lead, or for permission to make a difference,” he said.

The exercise was aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness and improving sanitation in the community.

Participants included senior high school students, trainees under the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP), personnel of the Ghana Prisons Service and officials from the Department of Environmental Health.

The volunteers desilted gutters clogged with sand and refuse and swept the principal streets of the town.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News, the Ahafo Regional Director of the National Youth Authority, Nicholas Sowah, expressed concern over the increasing rate at which some Ghanaians litter the environment, describing the practice as a major public health threat.

He urged young people, particularly students, to become ambassadors of good sanitation by promoting proper waste disposal and maintaining clean surroundings wherever they find themselves.

According to him, the NYA will continue to intensify public education on environmental sanitation to encourage positive behavioural change and protect public health.

The Ahafo Regional Coordinator of the National Apprenticeship Programme, Sulemana Baba Amadu, commended the NYA for organising the exercise, saying it would help address sanitation challenges in the region.

He stressed that keeping the environment clean should be a daily responsibility and not something reserved for periodic clean-up campaigns.

Mr Amadu urged residents to regularly clean their homes, frontages and communities rather than waiting for organised sanitation exercises before taking action.

The commitment was made when the Chief Executive Officer of the NYA, Osman Ayariga, and his delegation paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador of France to Ghana, H.E. Diarra Dimé-Labille, at the French Embassy in Accra.

Speaking during the meeting, Mr Ayariga expressed appreciation for the longstanding partnership between Ghana and France, describing the relationship as one anchored on a shared commitment to investing in young people as key drivers of national development.

He said the NYA remains focused on strengthening institutional partnerships that provide Ghanaian youth with opportunities in skills development, innovation, entrepreneurship and international cooperation.

The NYA Chief Executive highlighted the government’s flagship National Apprenticeship Programme, describing it as a transformative initiative designed to equip young Ghanaians with employable and industry-relevant skills.

According to him, the programme is aimed at improving the economic participation of young people while developing a productive workforce capable of contributing to Ghana’s socio-economic growth.

Mr Ayariga appealed to the French government to explore areas of collaboration with the NYA, particularly in expanding technical and vocational training opportunities, promoting knowledge exchange and supporting initiatives that prepare young people for global competitiveness.

He expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation between the two institutions would create sustainable opportunities for Ghanaian youth and further strengthen the relationship between Ghana and France.

As part of efforts to promote inclusive development, Mr Ayariga disclosed that between five and ten per cent of beneficiary slots under the National Apprenticeship Programme have been reserved for persons with disabilities.

He said the move reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that all young Ghanaians, including persons with disabilities, have access to opportunities that support their participation in the country’s economic transformation.

He made the remarks during the World Youth Skills Day celebration organised by the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) under the theme, “Skills for a Shared Future,” at the Accra City Hotel.

Speaking on the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP), Mr Ayariga said the NYA is collaborating with the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment and CTVET to ensure that more young Ghanaians acquire relevant skills that improve their employability.

He disclosed that although the programme set a target of allocating five per cent of its slots to persons with disabilities (PWDs) last year, only 1.5 per cent of beneficiaries were PWDs.

Mr Ayariga assured participants that steps were being taken to increase the participation of persons with disabilities in future cohorts of the programme.

He explained that the National Apprenticeship Programme is designed not only to provide skills training but also to support graduates with start-up tools to help them establish their own businesses after completing their training.

The NYA CEO urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the equipment provided, stressing the need to maximise the impact of government support.

He also encouraged young people to take advantage of initiatives such as the National Apprenticeship Programme, the Adwumawura Programme and the One Million Coders Initiative to develop their skills, create employment opportunities and contribute to national development.

According to him, young people must embrace opportunities in technical and vocational education and training (TVET), as practical skills provide pathways to self-employment and sustainable livelihoods.

Mr Ayariga commended CTVET for its continued efforts to equip young Ghanaians with relevant and market-driven skills.

He urged the youth to focus not only on acquiring certificates but also on mastering practical skills while developing values such as diligence, punctuality, discipline and reliability.

He reaffirmed the NYA’s commitment to youth development and empowerment, adding that the Authority remains open to partnerships and initiatives that will expand opportunities for young people across the country.

The exercise formed part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation and support national recovery efforts after the floods caused widespread destruction in several communities.

Staff of the Authority were joined by popular Nigerian comedian Parrot Mouth, who participated in the exercise and encouraged residents to adopt responsible sanitation practices.

Speaking at the launch and maiden conference of the Labour Law Society of Ghana on the theme, “Navigating the Frontiers of Digital Labour in Ghana,” Mr Ayariga stressed that digital labour is no longer the future of work but a present reality for many Ghanaian youth.

Addressing policymakers, legal practitioners, academics, industry leaders and young digital workers at the conference, he noted that ride-hailing drivers, content creators, freelancers, software developers and online entrepreneurs are making significant contributions to the economy without access to pensions, health insurance or employment security.

He described the widening gap between modern forms of employment and existing labour regulations as a pressing challenge that requires immediate attention.

Mr Ayariga also highlighted the NYA’s efforts to equip young people with the skills needed to thrive in the digital economy.

According to him, the Authority has trained 3,000 young people in online marketing and digital entrepreneurship, with each beneficiary receiving a tablet to support their business activities.

He added that a further 300 youth have completed training in mobile application development, while 1,000 others are currently undergoing training in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to position them for emerging opportunities in the global digital marketplace.

Calling for a coordinated response, Mr Ayariga urged government, the judiciary, the private sector, and development partners to create an environment that balances innovation with worker protection.

He advocated for inclusive labour laws, fair taxation for digital workers, improved access to finance, and stronger safeguards against cybersecurity threats and mental health challenges.

“The future of work is digital. Ghana’s youth are already inhabitants of that future. Our collective obligation is to ensure that such a future is equitable, protected and full of opportunity,” he said.

According to the Federation, the omission of the National Youth Authority (NYA) and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) contradicts Ghana’s legal and policy framework on youth development.

In a statement issued by its President, Sherif Ghali, the GYF stressed that the two institutions are backed by Acts of Parliament and play a central role in delivering employment, skills training, and empowerment opportunities for young people.

“These are not optional institutions. Their exclusion undermines both law and policy,” the statement emphasised.

The Federation expressed concern that despite a total DACF allocation of approximately GH¢8.7 billion, no dedicated funding has been earmarked for the NYA and YEA.

It described the development as a “fundamental policy failure,” particularly at a time when youth unemployment remains a pressing national challenge.

The GYF further linked the decision to broader socio-economic pressures, citing the overwhelming number of applications for recent security service recruitment as evidence of limited opportunities for young people.

It warned that neglecting youth-focused funding could worsen unemployment and increase social risks.

The Federation is therefore calling for an immediate review of the DACF formula to include ring-fenced allocations for the two agencies.

It also urged the Office of the President, Parliament, and relevant ministries to ensure that funding decisions are aligned with national youth development priorities.

The four-day summit, held from March 10 to 13, 2026, at the UPSA Auditorium, is themed “Transgenerational Impact.”

Addressing participants, the Chief Executive Officer of the NYA, Osman Ayariga, encouraged young people to adopt a mindset focused on long-term transformation and legacy.

Speaking on economic empowerment, he noted that President John Dramani Mahama established the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment to create programmes and opportunities that improve the livelihoods of Ghanaian youth.

He highlighted several initiatives aimed at supporting youth development, including the Adwumawura Programme, the National Apprenticeship Programme, and the One Million Coders Initiative.

These programmes seek to equip young people with practical skills, support start-ups, and expand opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.

Mr Ayariga further urged the youth to plan their futures carefully, emphasising that meaningful impact takes time.

He advised young people to move beyond merely seeking employment and instead focus on building healthy lifestyles and avoiding drug abuse, cautioning: “Let’s stop red before red stops us.”

Touching on recent campus clashes across the country, Mr Ayariga expressed concern about rising violence in inter-school sporting events.

He called on students to channel their energy into constructive dialogue and debates that promote national development.

Mr Ayariga also announced plans to establish school clubs nationwide to promote peace and security, noting: “Nothing is worth fighting for if it’s not fighting against poverty.”

The summit, organised by Brian Amoateng, founder of iYES, in partnership with the NYA, has become one of Ghana’s most influential youth development platforms, providing mentorship, practical knowledge, and inspiration to thousands of young people.

The event brings together leaders from governance, business, entrepreneurship, ministries, and the creative industries to equip the next generation with the skills and vision to make meaningful contributions to society.

The remarks were made during the official distribution of tools and equipment to the first batch of beneficiaries in the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ayariga said, “This programme is not just about training; it is about empowering our youth with the skills, tools, and confidence to create opportunities and drive economic growth. It represents a long-term investment in Ghana’s human capital.”

Beneficiaries received equipment such as sewing machines, dryers, toolboxes, and safety gear to support careers in tailoring, carpentry, electrical work, and beauty services.

The NYA CEO emphasised that NAP is fully aligned with the NDC 2024 manifesto, which prioritises inclusive growth, youth empowerment, and job creation. “President Mahama has consistently highlighted that investing in young people is investing in the future of Ghana. NAP ensures that no young Ghanaian is left behind due to financial or social barriers,” he said.

Mr Ayariga also highlighted the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in fostering industrialisation and reducing unemployment. “By equipping our youth with practical skills and integrating apprenticeships into national development, we are building a resilient workforce ready to meet the demands of a changing economy,” he added.

Concluding his address, the CEO encouraged beneficiaries and stakeholders to maximise the opportunities provided. “For the young Ghanaians here today, these tools are not just equipment – they are instruments of independence, dignity, and hope. When we empower our youth, we empower Ghana,” he said.

At a brief handing-over ceremony, the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, said the vehicles are intended to support National Apprenticeship Coordinators in all sixteen regions to efficiently supervise master craft persons and apprentices.

He noted that improved mobility would enhance monitoring, strengthen coordination and ensure the timely achievement of the programme’s objectives.

Mr Opare Addo urged the coordinators to take proper care of the vehicles to ensure sustained benefits for apprentices under the programme.

He disclosed that tracking devices have been installed in all the vehicles to prevent misuse and ensure accountability, and cautioned the Chief Executive Officer of the NYA to closely supervise their use, stressing that management would be held responsible for any abuse.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Osman Ayariga, said the National Apprenticeship Programme is currently training about 14,000 beneficiaries nationwide, with plans to scale up to 100,000 trainees in line with the commitment of the President.

He emphasised that the success of any major programme depends on adequate logistics and investment, describing the provision of the vehicles as both timely and necessary.

According to Mr Ayariga, the vehicles will significantly enhance the work of regional coordinators and support the mandate entrusted to the Authority.

He added that the National Apprenticeship Programme goes beyond skills acquisition, serving as a key driver of industrialisation and a strategic initiative to position Ghana as a global hub for skills development.

Speaking on behalf of the regional coordinators, the Volta Regional Coordinator for NAP, Johnson Korbla Samlafo, expressed appreciation to MYDE and the NYA for the vehicles, noting that improved logistics would boost operational efficiency and strengthen the delivery of hands-on, skills-based training to apprentices nationwide.

According to the NYA, it represents over 0.5 million people and serves as the mouthpiece for the Nzema ethnic group. The Nzema area in Ghana is divided into three electoral districts: Nzema East, Ellembelle, and Jomoro.

The alliance congratulated President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on their electoral victory under the Fourth Republic. It also expressed gratitude to the president for promoting inclusivity and regional balance in his government.

“We wish to express our gratitude to President Mahama for his focus on inclusivity and regional balance, as demonstrated by the appointments of Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Emelia Arthur as Minister for Fisheries – both from the Western Region,” said George Amenlemah Blay-Morkeh, Chairman of the NYA.

However, the NYA expressed deep concerns about the government’s failure to appoint a representative from the Western Region to the Ministry of Energy or its associated agencies, such as the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Ghana Gas, the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, and the Volta River Authority (VRA).

“Despite being the heart of Ghana’s oil and gas industry, the Western Region remains underrepresented in the very sector that drives national development. This exclusion is troubling as it fails to recognise the region’s significant role in housing the oil fields,” Blay-Morkeh said.

The alliance also raised concerns about the lack of representation for the Nzema people, who have been directly impacted by oil and gas activities in their communities.

“Our communities have borne the environmental, social, and economic costs of the oil industry. We have made considerable sacrifices, yet we remain excluded from the decision-making bodies that shape the future of the energy sector,” he added.

The NYA warned that this exclusion undermines the contributions of the people of the Western Region and raises questions about the government’s commitment to equitable distribution of opportunities.

“This is the first time the Nzemas and the Western Region have been so completely alienated from leadership in the oil and gas sector since its emergence in Ghana,” he lamented.

The alliance is calling on the government to address these concerns and ensure that the Western Region, particularly the Nzema people, are properly represented in the Ministry of Energy and its associated agencies.

The two-day training was organized by the National Youth Authority (NYA) in collaboration with the National Developing Programme and the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Speaking to Adom News, the District Director for NYA, Roger Obeng Agyekum, highlighted that the program was designed to equip the entrepreneurs with effective strategies to grow their businesses.

The training is expected to enable participants to generate higher incomes and provide employment opportunities for others, thereby contributing to the fight against youth unemployment in the area.

Mr. Obeng Agyekum also mentioned that after this initial training, the young entrepreneurs would undergo additional processes, with some likely to receive awards from the National Developing Programme and the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Some beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the organizers, acknowledging the value of the lessons learned, which they believe will have a positive impact on their business growth.

The Group is an umbrella body that espouses youth participation in the fight against climate change by bringing together various youth-led organisations and other relevant stakeholders for positive action.

Its membership comprises representatives from the National Council of Persons with Disability (PWD), the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), UN Systems, private practitioners and State Ministries, Departments and Agencies such as NYA, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Forestry Commission, Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Ministry of Gender and Social Protection.

Effectively, the aim of the NYAGCC is to harmonize the activities of these organizations through organizational collaboration, partnership development, capacity building, and advocacy, and policy influence in order to achieve a meaningful impact in promoting climate action in Ghana.

The event came off at the Ministry of Information Press Centre on Tuesday, October 24,2023.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NYA, Pius Enam Hadzide indicated that, the formation of NYAGCC is testament to governments commitment to protect and preserve the country’s resources towards building a sustainable and resilient future.

“There is an unremitting need to strengthen efforts for young people and other stakeholders to fully understand the rigours of the climate crisis. The National Youth Authority seeks to do so by creating a space where visionary ideas transform into actionable initiatives, where advocacy translates into policy, and where our youth drive us toward a sustainable, climate-resilient future. We do so in tandem with the National Youth Policy 2022-2032 and its implementation” he noted.

The Action Group is envisioned to foster youth engagement and empowerment, knowledge sharing and learning, resource mobilization and community engagement and action through capacity building and advocacy, organizational collaboration, partnership development and policy influence.

Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Evans Opoku Bobie, who launched the Group in the stead of the Minister, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, acknowledged the formation of NYAGCC as a laudable innovation. He was particularly impressed by the youth’s interest in accessing mechanisms to enable them to contribute to the design, implementation, and review of climate policies and programmes at all levels.

“It is my fervent prayer that the NYAGCC serves as the pre-eminent platform for innovation, advocacy, and implementation – a space where ideas, knowledge, and resources converge to drive meaningful change,”. It will channel the passion of our youth into tangible, impactful initiatives that will drive us towards a sustainable, climate-resilient future” he said.

The Minister also pointed out that government, led by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is prepared to wholly involve the youth in the policy-making process in order to ensure decisions taken represent their actual needs.

“We believe that the development of Ghana is interwoven with judicious resource management. The call to action, therefore, extends to the youth, who form over 11.7 million of our total population, and serve as both custodians and recipients of the consequences ensuing from environmental degradation and the depletion of our natural wealth.”

The event convened prominent speakers like the National Coordinator, National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP), Dr. Carol Donkor, Rep for the UN Resident Coordinator, Charles Abani, and the Executive Director for the Association of Ghana Startups, Solomon Adjei.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NYA, Pius Hadzide also urged Mosques across the country to also support.

“I’m also pleading with all churches in Ghana to also donate their second offerings this Sunday to the NYA to help support our beloved brethren who are suffering. To the various Mosques, I know they barely take offering but I plead with them to make some contribution on Friday when they go to worship to support those hit by the flood” he said in an interview with Abena Opokua Ahwenee on Adom TV Political show, The Big Agenda.

The NYA in collaboration with some stakeholders are mobilising relief items to support people affected by spillage.

This was after the Volta River Authority (VRA) on September 15, 2023, begun to spill excess water from Akosombo and Kpong Dams to save them from collapse.

This was due to heavy rainfall in the Northern and Volta catchment resulting in the fast rise of of water level at the dams.

The spillage has resulted in flooding in some districts of the Volta region displacing residents in the area.

Even though government through National Disaster Management Organisation(NADMO) is proving support, the NYA CEO said they are also contributing their quota.

Mr. Hadzide indicated that, their focus is on the youth in the area who are most affected.

“The government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is doing well by proving the necessary needs for the affected but we at NYA also has responsibility in ensuing better life and safety of the youth of this country so we are mobilising to get something to support them. If you look at those who have been affected, the youth are more and as Authority responsible for the youth we have to take step and help them” he said.

The NYA CEO also revealed that, he has had an engagement with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana to support their initiative.

At a diplomatic meeting held at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Ghana, Mr. Hadzide highlighted the importance of the relationship between Ghana and China in three dimensions: bilateral, multilateral, and people-to-people connections.

He emphasized that the “people-to-people” dimension is of paramount importance, as it allows the young people of both nations to develop meaningful relationships.

The NYA CEO noted that, approximately 70% of Ghana’s population is below 40 years of age. Given this demographic, he stressed that fostering positive relations among the youth of both countries is crucial. Such relationships, he believes, will lead to more productive interactions and collaborations in the future.

Furthermore, Mr. Hadzide underscored the critical role that the youth play within the Ghana-China trade ecosystem, emphasizing the need for youth-oriented initiatives that can strengthen this relationship.

He recalled that the Chinese government and the former youth council, which has now evolved into the NYA, enjoyed a strong relationship in the past. However, this relationship waned for various reasons. He has therefore called for the reinstatement of this robust connection between the two nations.

Introducing the National Youth Volunteers Program (NYVP) as one of NYA’s flagship initiatives, he highlighted its similarities to common practices in China. This program, Mr. Hadzide explained, reflects shared values between Ghana and China and serves as a platform for enhancing the bonds between the two countries.

“The NYVP has engaged approximately one hundred thousand youth volunteers in various fields and modules, leading to noteworthy contributions such as the construction of school buildings by these volunteers” he noted.

Pius Hadzide appealed to the Chinese government to support the NYA, particularly in the areas of finance, technical assistance, and capacity building aimed at enhancing young people’s participation in patriotism and leadership development.

Reiterating the mandate of the National Youth Authority, he stressed the importance of inculcating the spirit of patriotism, discipline, and leadership skills among Ghanaian youth. To this end, he proposed the establishment of a Youth Leadership Training Program Institute, also known as the “Youth Leadership Center of Excellence.”

Mr. Hadzide expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Chinese government for its enduring support and collaboration over the years. He looks forward to further strengthening the bond between the two countries, particularly in the context of youth development and engagement.

Speaking on behalf of the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Lu Kun , Mr. Shang Lingfeng, an Attaché, reflected on the profound diplomatic relationship between Ghana and China.

He said both nations established diplomatic ties in 1960, with their collaboration evolving over the years.

Mr. Shang Lingfeng noted that since 1963, Ghana and China have been actively involved in bilateral and multilateral negotiations, further strengthening the relationship between the two countries. He highlighted their mutual respect for human rights, as mandated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR).

The Chinese representative stressing on the bond between the two countries, recalled the visit of Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo to China in 2018, when he attended the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

He said Youth and education are critical aspects of the bilateral relationship between China and Ghana and on their side, they have cooperated on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVETs). Saying an example, he explained is a Chinese-built vocational institutions upgrade project which was completed not long ago, injecting a new impetus to the development of vocational education in the West African country.

Mr. Shang Lingfeng said the Chinese government has significantly established a new examination center for Ghana’s Ministry of Education included in the the AVIC International Holding Corporation project.

He further explained that because Chinese culture and language are also being promoted in Ghana, there has been an introduction of Chinese philosophy in the three major universities and approximately ten thousand Ghanaian students are currently enrolled in these courses.

“China provides two types of scholarships to Ghanaian students, ie. scholarships under the Confucius Institute for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, as well as the China Government Scholarship, which has seen Ghana as the highest applicant in Africa”.

Mr. Shang Lingfeng concluded by highlighting China’s commitment to strengthening its international connections and commended the National Youth Authority (NYA) for its National Youth Volunteers Program (NYVP). China, he revealed, operates a systematic volunteer program that encourages young people at a tender age to participate in various events. He praised the concept of volunteerism and noted that introducing it to Ghana’s youth is a valuable initiative.

As a final promise, he committed to informing his colleagues in the Youth Development Department and the Political Directorate about the appeal for the establishment of the Institute of Youth Leadership of Excellence, further solidifying the ties between China and Ghana in the field of youth and education.

The program, dubbed “Public Health” aimed to improve awareness and education regarding crucial reproductive health issues and address the rising cases of teenage pregnancy, particularly within the Bibiani Anwhiaso Bekwai municipality and its surrounding areas.

Maclean Desmond, the Western North Regional Director of the National Youth Authority (NYA), said the motive behind the program was to educate the girls on reproductive health and also how to maintain personal hygiene, especially during their menstrual period.

In reports that shed light on the concerning use of contraceptives among young females leading to health issues, Maclean Desmond emphasised the importance of health personnel advising young ladies to avoid using unprescribed medicines.

Speaking at the event, Paul Andoh, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, stressed the need for continuous support and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the well-being and empowerment of teenage girls in the community.

He acknowledged the efforts of the Ghana Education Service in taking the lead and ensuring that teenage girls receive essential education in this area.

According to Paul Andoh, the program has played a vital role in equipping young girls with knowledge about reproductive health, particularly menstruation.

The MCE stated that many young girls who became pregnant at an early age lack awareness of the dangers associated with sexual intercourse.

He said educating them about these dangers at an early age would help prevent teenage pregnancies.

Also, some facilitators of the program urged mothers to make sacrifices for their daughters during this stage, ensuring they grow up to become responsible citizens.

The students who benefitted from the education appreciated the efforts made to discuss these significant issues and provide them with the information they require.

They value the organisers’ dedication to their welfare and wish for future campaigns to encourage and promote reproductive health education. They also shared with Adom News what they were taught.

The 2023 Economic and Social Council Youth Forum provides a platform for young people to engage in a dialogue with Member States and other actors to voice their views, concerns and galvanize actions on how to transform the world into a fairer, greener and more sustainable place guided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The forum further addressed the theme of ECOSOC and the 2023 UN High-level Political Forum on sustainable development (HLPF) on “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at levels”.

It also reviewed progress in the areas of clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), and partnerships for the goals (SDG17).

The dilapidated school building, which was fast deteriorating, received a major facelift from volunteers under the Infrastructure Module of the National Youth Volunteer Programme.

The school now boasts newly renovated classroom blocks, a teachers common room, a head teacher’s office, and an Information and Communication Technology Center to ensure pupils are abreast with ICT.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Pius Enam Hadzide, called on corporate Ghana to support the National Youth Volunteer Programme (NYVP) in making it a success.

He made the call during a ceremony to officially hand over the newly renovated Abume D/A primary school to the community.

The school is now a beneficiary of the “free labour” hard-working Ghanaian youth who volunteered under the National Youth Volunteer Programme, specifically, the Infrastructure module.

Mr. Hadzide disclosed that, the project cost about one-sixth of the total estimated cost should it have been done by a contractor.

He reiterated that, more infrastructure could therefore be built should the programme gain more support.

He appealed to individuals and philanthropists who also share the belief that Ghana can be developed through youthful engagement such as volunteerism to come on board and help the programme achieve its goal.

Mr. Enam Hadzide also extended his profound gratitude to the chiefs and people of Abume for their support and commitment to finishing the project.

He expressed his satisfaction with the local volunteers who freely volunteered their labour and expertise in renovating the dilapidated school building.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of NYA in charge of Programs and Operations, Nelson Owusu Ansah, also charged the youth to cultivate the spirit of volunteerism, as he describes it as a core value of Ghanaian society.

He encouraged the youth to take up the responsibility of helping their communities and to volunteer in any activity that promotes national development.

The headmistress of the school, Edith Nyawuame, thanked the authority for the work done, describing it as a game changer that will increase student enrollment and retention.

The Assemblyman for the area, Prosper Agbenyo, also thanked all the volunteers who sacrificed their time and energy for the successful completion of the school building.

He praised the National Youth Authority for such a laudable initiative and called for more of these projects to be brought to the Municipality.

Background

The National Youth Volunteer Programme is a flagship programme of the National Youth Authority designed to encourage the spirit of Patriotism, Nationalism, and Volunteerism among the Ghanaian Youth. The Programme which was launched by the vice president of Ghana, H.E. Mahamudu Bawumia, seeks to bring on board over 100, 000 volunteers across the country to volunteer on various developmental projects to promote nation-building. Areas such as the Youth Development Module, Infrastructure Module, Gender Module, Education and Health Module; all under the NYVP allows the youth to volunteer in their field of interest.

With a total of 40 beneficiaries from the Sehwi Wiawso and Akontombra districts, the NYA has carried out a Skill Toward Employability and Productivity (STEP) project which intends to equip the selected youth in these districts with employable and productive skills, in line with Sustainable Development Goal Eight (SDG 8).

The STEP project is a program designed by the National Youth Authority (NYA) under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, with the sole aim of elevating capacity and equipping them to be more productive and self-reliant.

As part of the programme, the Deputy Director of the National Youth Authority, Nelson Owusu Ansah, said the government has catered for the entire cost involved in securing Master Craftsmen for the training and also provided all the needed equipment that will aid the beneficiaries to maximize the training experience.

He emphasised the numerous opportunities of TVET for the unemployed mass of youth in the country.

The Skill Toward Employability and Productivity (STEP) project, Mr Nelson Owusu Ansah said, will commence with employable skills in four areas, including Fashion design (Dressmaking), Hairdressing, Cosmetology, and Digital Satellite installation.

The Regional Director of the National Youth Authority, Mr Maclean Desmond, encouraged beneficiaries of the STEP project to appreciate the government’s commitment to the course and utilize the opportunity profitably.

Adding to that, he indicated the directorate’s doors are opened to receive their concerns and to offer any other assistance they may need.

He also appealed to the various masters who have been selected to train some STEP beneficiaries to exercise full patience with their apprentice and to the apprentice, he urged them to take the training seriously to be able to attain their goals in the future.

Also, some of the beneficiaries speaking to the media commended the government for introducing such an initiative to support them achieve their aspirations.

The decision was made in memory of Christian Atsu, a Ghanaian footballer who tragically lost his life during the recent earthquake that struck Turkey.

Atsu was in the country to play for his Turkish team when the earthquake hit, claiming his life along with several others.

The declaration of the day of mourning is meant to honor Atsu’s life and show solidarity with his family and friends during this difficult time. All regional and district offices of the NYA have been instructed to wear black to mark the occasion.

Pius Hadzide expressed his condolences to Atsu’s family and described him as a young man with immense talent and potential.

“Christian Atsu was not just a great footballer, but he was also a role model to many young people in Ghana,” he said

The NYA boss also expressed satisfaction with the government’s decision to fully participate in the funeral and burial of the fallen hero.

The declaration of the day of mourning at all regional and district offices of the NYA is a testament to the agency’s commitment to supporting young people and their families in times of need.

The NYA is encouraging all Ghanaians to join them in honoring the life of Christian Atsu on Friday, as they mourn the loss of a young man who had so much to offer.

At a brief meeting held at the premises of UNESCO to present copies of the recently launched National Youth Policy and its implementation plan, Mr Hadzide said his presentation to UNESCO is in the right direction because the mandate of UNESCO aligns with the work of NYA .

He said the Authority is pleased to be partnering UNESCO in this regard and asked for strengthening of ties between the two institutions to efficiently work for the development of the Ghanaian youth.

He seized the opportunity to educate the team at UNESCO on some projects by the authority such as STEP; which seeks to train both skilled and unskilled people for economic empowerment and the NYVP; which also places value on volunteerism, will increase employability skills among the youth whilst they contribute their quota to national development.

The CEO on behalf of the governing board and staff of NYA, thanked them for their unwavering commitment to the successful celebration of this year’s International Youth Day (IYD).

The Country Director for UNESCO, Abdourahamane Diallo, commending the NYA for their efforts in youth development said his outfit has taken notice of the projects and programmes of the Authority, and congratulated NYA for its handwork in bringing together such an august gathering of young people for IYD22.

He said the National Youth Policy is a blueprint which will guide them to identify areas of the policy in the various sectors to work on. “We will also share the policy document with our global youth community whom we have constant dialogue with to facilitate the overall development of the youth.”

He expressed interest in collaborating with the authority in the areas of education, youth advocacy, culture, STEM, digitization and I.C.T.

Mr Hadzide made the call on Tuesday when the Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club paid a courtesy call on the management of the NYA at its headquarters in Accra.

“The Ghana FA and other stakeholders should put a premium on the development of women’s football because the females have the same potential as their male counterparts, so there is no reason why they should not get the kind of support they deserve for them to be recognised on the global stage,” Mr Hadzide disclosed.

His comment follows numerous criticisms that present and past governments have not done enough to promote the growth of women’s football in the country.

In response, the ex-deputy Sports Minister stated that the current government has not only shown enough commitment to make women’s football more attractive, but it has made an appreciable investment in the sport.

“Let me state that the Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC has done extremely well, but what is worth mentioning is that placing second at the Africa Women’s Championship held in Ivory Coast proves that the current government’s investment in women’s football is yielding results,” he added.

On her part, the Deputy CEO in charge of Finance and Administration at the NYA, Akosua Manu, encouraged the footballers to strive hard to overcome barriers that society places on them in order to make football a secure career for other women.

The Deputy CEO in charge of Operations and Programmes at the NYA, Nelson Owusu Ansah, also challenged Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC to be role models for other young girls who aspire to be female footballers in future.

The CEO of Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC Nana Opoku Fosu Gyabour II, expressed gratitude to the management of NYA for their support over the years and appealed for more support.

Chief Executive of the Authority, Pius Enam Hadzide who made this known at the official unveiling of activities to mark this year’s celebrations at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday said the event will be held from 10th to 12th August 2022, at the Anagkazo Bible and Ministry Training Center – Akwapem Mampong.

He said the celebrations will be under the theme; “Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for all Ages’’ and will highlight the need to foster solidarity across generations in the pursuit of building the future we want and raises awareness of the barriers which hamper intergenerational solidarity and impede the creation of an age-inclusive world where no one is left behind.

“Ghana has constantly commemorated the International Day of the Youth in years past with the NYA and its mother Ministry organizing activities to memorialize the day and draw attention to not only the challenges and aspirations of the youth of our country but also to amplify the creative solutions being formulated to deal with the challenges whiles at the same time highlighting the opportunities therein for the youth.

“Government through the NYA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports will participate in this year’s global celebration of the youth in a remarkable manner. To that end, a series of activities have been put together and we are here today in the spirit of accountability and involvement to break communications on these activities as we perform this media launch,” he said.

In attendance was the Deputy CEO in charge of Programs and Operations, Nelson Owusu Ansah, Deputy CEO in charge of the Finance and Administration, Akosua Asaa Manu, management of the Authority, political and youth groups and a gaggle of reporters from the media.

Other Activities

Maiden National Youth Conference

In fulfilment of the statutory requirement, the NYA shall for the first time since the passage of the Act 939 in 2016, organize a National Youth Conference. Representation is national and non-partisan with each district sending a minimum of two delegates. Youth groups and special interest groups have also been accredited to send delegates.

A total of about two thousand young Ghanaians with diverse backgrounds and drawn from; Youth NGOs and CSOs, Young Journalists, Students and Student Leaders, Young Entrepreneurs, Young Parliamentarians, Ministers, MMDCEs and other duty bearers, Youth Wings of registered political parties, Young Women Networks, Young Persons with Disabilities and many more.

Launch of National Youth Policy

The NYA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports after extensive consultations have reviewed the 2010 youth policy. The policy document received cabinet approval and would be launched by President Akufo-Addo as part of the International Youth Day celebrations. The Policy aims at ensuring a comprehensive framework and direction for all stakeholders involved in the implementation of policies, programs, and projects for youth development.

National Youth Policy Dissemination Forum

The aim of this activity is to sensitize and inform stakeholders about the thematic areas of the National Youth Policy and the implementation plan to ensure their understanding and create awareness and enhance stakeholders’ ownership of the policy.

The incident, which happened over the weekend, has sparked a nationwide discourse, especially since both suspects and victims are minors.

Mr Ansah has taken to his Facebook page to opine that a proper diagnosis of youth deviancy will be a lasting solution to such incidents.

“The youth are always perceived as the rabble-rousers, deviant in society and so on. We may be right or not! What we have failed to do is properly diagnose the issues confronting young people in these contemporary times and even identify the issues of vulnerabilities,” he wrote.

He explained the youth are constantly being exposed to dangerous crimes in their homes, schools and society in general, and thus the need for the “serious discourse on youth vulnerabilities and the impact it is creating in our society.”

The registration process will cover both existing and all newly formed youth groups.

According to the authority, this is in fulfilment of their mandate under Section (25) of the National Youth Authority Act (Act 939).

The process they say covers the community, district, regional and national levels leading to the formation of the Ghana Youth Federation as per Section 3(d) of Act 939.

“The basic purpose of the exercise is to compile an up-to-date, comprehensive and reliable database of these organisations to ensure purposeful and more effective coordination of youth development and empowerment interventions and to effectively regulate the youth sector,” the authority said in a statement.

They noted this database will reflect the prevailing conditions of the youth will also provide the Authority with a unique opportunity to meaningfully engage them to drive overall national development goals.

Consequently, all youth-focused organisations including adventure, disability and gender-based, governance inspired, religious/faith based, settlement and/or community development, health-based, students and youth networks are hereby mandated to contact the nearest district, regional and national directorates of the Authority to fulfil this legislative requirement.

Chief Executive Officer, Sylvester Tetteh urged the graduates to pursue academic excellence for a secured future.

NATIONAL YOUTH AUTHORITY CONGRATULATES 2020 BASIC EDUCATION CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (B.E.C.E) GRADUATES

The Chief Executive Officer Mr. Sylvester Tetteh, management and staff of the National Youth Authority wishes to congratulate all graduates of the just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E) for pulling through successfully.

We also wish to commend the Government for its decisiveness, firmness and purposeful action in ensuring the smooth take off and completion of the examination amidst the Covid19 pandemic. A former Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, Nii Amassah Namoale, has said the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Emmanuel Asigri, wasn’t qualified for his position at the NYA.

According to Mr Namoale, suspended CEO didn’t resign because of the alleged procurement breaches but because he did not have the requisite academic qualification for that position he occupied.

Speaking on Accra-based Accra FM, the former Deputy Minister alleged that Mr Asigri did not have the minimum requirement for the position which was the first degree.

“Asigri was not even qualified for the job in the first place.  He is just an HND holder. A lot of people enter into politics and they portray themselves as having attended school here and there and attained this degree or that degree, yet they don’t have those qualifications,” he noted.

“People pretend to have degrees when they don’t actually have, and I will appeal to the political parties to be wary of that,” he said

Mr Asigri resigned from post a few days after a member of the Authority’s Board, Mr Arnold Boateng resigned over what he described at the time as “real issues” at the Authority.

It is unclear at this stage what the real reason for the resignation is although reports suggest that the NYA CEO was forced to resign over alleged procurement breaches.
