This follows a crunch meeting with the leadership of the striking doctors, management of the hospital, and representatives of the Lands Commission and representatives of private developers on Wednesday.

The meeting ended conclusively as the concerns of the doctors were addressed.

Early on Wednesday, doctors at KATH embarked on a strike over accommodation issues.

The development took a toll on healthcare delivery as patients were left stranded at the facility.

Following the meeting the doctors assured they will publicly communicate their next line of action.

Though the doctors did not categorically state they will resume work, expectations are that they will since their grievances have been addressed.

Health Ministry responds to KATH doctors’ eviction notice https://www.adomonline.com/health-ministry-responds-to-kath-doctors-eviction-notice/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 06:24:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2368769 The Ministry of Health has responded to the eviction notice served doctors of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) on their residential apartments.

The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry, Isaac Baah Offei has said they are fully aware of the situation and are actively seeking to resolve it.

About 30 doctors, including heads of directorates and lead surgeons in the past days have been stranded over the sale of their Danyame residence to a private developer.

According to the Chairman of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association, Dr. Michael Leat, doctors were notified about the sale with assurances that they would not be moved to another location a year ago.

However, they were recently given a one-week ultimatum to vacate the premises without any resettlement plans, a development which triggered an indefinite strike action but for the timely intervention of stakeholders.

But in an interview on Adom FM Burning Issues, Mr Offei noted the notice was not issued by the government.

“The government who gave them the bungalows did not issue them any letters it was from the contractor and I wonder why anybody will do that to cause fear and panic among the doctors.

“We’ve have not gotten to that point because even of you want to evict a tenant, you don’t give them one-week ultimatum,” he said.

The PRO further allayed fears and dismissed claims that the doctors were being pushed out without alternative accommodation.

“Government has put in place measures to relocate the doctors and they will be the same people to occupy the buildings when completed,” he assured.

Meanwhile, the doctors are likely to resume work today, March 14, 2024, after their absence on Wednesday left several patients stranded.

This follows a meeting between the hospital’s management, the striking doctors, officials from the Lands Commission, and a representative from the Danyame Redevelopment Committee during which their concerns were addressed.

The meeting had in attendance KATH management, the striking doctors, officials from the Lands Commission, and a representative from the Danyame Redevelopment Committee.

Speaking on Adom FM Burning Issues, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Health Ministry, Isaac Baah Offei assured all the grievances of the doctors have been addressed.

“The issue had to do with miscommunication but since Tuesday night, we have been able to resolve the issue and calm has been restored. The allegation that they were being pushed out without alternative accommodation and all related matters have been addressed,” he assured.

On Wednesday, the doctors ceased their duties in protest of a forceful eviction from their bungalows at Danyame with their action taking a toll on healthcare delivery.

As of 9am, the Out-Patient Department (OPD) of the health facility was inundated with patients who had trooped in to seek health care.

Hundreds were left stranded as nurses on duty took time to explain to patients and family members why they were not being attended to.

Meanwhile, Mr Offei has said the doctors will resume work on Thursday morning.

He added the leadership of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association will in due course officially communicate its plans to the public.
