Ghanaian musician Sista Afia has urged fellow artistes to pay greater attention to the cleanliness of microphones used during live performances, encouraging them to disinfect shared equipment before using it.
In a social media post on August 28, 2026, the musician described her advice as potentially controversial but said it was necessary for artistes to take their health seriously.
“I’m going to say something controversial, but my fellow artists need to hear this. PLEASE DISINFECT THE MIC BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR MOUTH ON IT!” she wrote.
Sista Afia noted that artistes often move from one show to another, using the same microphones that have been shared by several performers.
According to her, microphones can come into contact with the mouths of different people, with artistes singing, talking and breathing into the equipment during performances.
She said she believed artistes should consider carrying microphone-safe disinfectant sprays or wipes in their bags to clean shared microphones before performing.
She also suggested that artistes who can afford it could consider carrying their own microphones to performances as an additional precaution.
While acknowledging that not every illness experienced after a show can be attributed to microphone use, Sista Afia said taking preventive measures could help reduce potential health risks associated with sharing performance equipment.
“I’m not saying every sickness after a show comes from a microphone, but with so many people sharing the same equipment, why not take precautions?” she said.
She urged her colleagues to take the issue seriously and prioritise their health by disinfecting microphones before performances.
