A final year student of Erimon Senior High Technical School in the Lawra Municipality of the Upper West Region is in the grips of the police for reporting to school with a locally made pistol hidden in his bag.

The 18-year-old student, whose name has been withheld, had one live cartridge in his bag.

Information gathered by The Finder reveals that the gun was discovered when school authorities used a checklist to inspect every item in the luggage of students.

The search was conducted on Thursday, September 13, 2018, before students were allocated dormitories to begin the 2018/2019 academic year.

The suspect was sent to the Municipal Police Station in Lawra, where he was detained and later transferred to the Regional Police Headquarters at Wa.

Sources have told The Finder that the student has denied owning the gun.

According to the sources, the student told police investigators that the bag in which the gun was found was given to him by his brother, and he did not know there was a gun in it.

Upper West Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kwadwo Boapea Otchere confirmed the incident when contacted on phone by this reporter.

In January 2018, the Erimon SHTS was closed down after students of the institution went on rampage.

The violent demonstration led to the destruction of sections of dormitories, administration block and classroom structures.
