A self-styled pastor believed to be in his 30s has vandalised the statue of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Kejetia Roundabout in Kumasi.
The incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Saturday when the suspect allegedly scaled the barricade surrounding the monument armed with a machete and began hacking at the statue.
An eyewitness, Kwaku Sei, told Adom News that the man repeatedly struck the monument until its head was severed.
According to him, the suspect calmly entered the restricted area before carrying out the attack.
“After cutting off the head of the statue, he stood there holding the machete and kept saying that no power is greater than God,” the eyewitness recounted.
The eyewitness said some angry youth who witnessed the incident quickly overpowered the suspect before military personnel intervened and rescued him from the mob.
“If the security officers had not intervened, the crowd would have beaten him to death. The military took him away, but we do not know where they sent him,” he added.
The attack left the head of the statue completely destroyed and has sparked widespread outrage and discussions across the Ashanti Region.
