The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has accompanied the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, to present assorted food items and beverages to the Ga Mantse and the Ga Traditional Council ahead of this year’s Homowo Festival celebrations.
The donation, made on behalf of the President of the Republic, is to support the traditional council and the people of Ga in preparations towards the annual festival.
The items presented included 119 bags of maize, 119 containers of palm oil, 30 bottles of Black Label, 33 cartons of Castle Bridge, 19 cartons of schnapps, 130 cartons of beer, 81 cartons of Guinness, 83 cartons of Malta Guinness, and 83 cartons of mineral water.
The Regional Minister and the Mayor were joined by the Municipal Chief Executive for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Hon. Alfred Allotey Gaisie; the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Hon. Alfred Kotey Ashie; and other government officials.
Speaking after the presentation, Hon. Ocloo said the delegation visited the Ga Traditional Council to convey the President’s goodwill and support to the Ga State ahead of this year’s Homowo Festival celebrations.
She said Ga Mashie, as the centre of the Homowo celebrations, should lead by example by promoting peace, cleanliness, and responsible conduct, adding that the festival should provide an opportunity for residents to demonstrate respect for traditional values, leadership, and the customs handed down by their forebears.
She also raised concerns about the increasing occupation of roads, pavements, and other public spaces by traders and businesses and stressed that some individuals had placed refrigerators and other trading equipment on roads, thereby obstructing both vehicular and pedestrian movement.
She said the situation was unacceptable and explained that public complaints often arose whenever city authorities conducted clean-up or removal exercises, even though the activities were necessary to restore order and protect public safety.
She recalled the President’s call for every day to be regarded as Sanitation Day and encouraged residents to regularly clean their homes, workplaces, streets, and communities.
She appealed to the people to preserve the values inherited from their grandparents and traditional leaders, promote unity, and avoid allowing chieftaincy disputes and leadership disagreements to divide them.
The Mayor also wished the Ga people a happy traditional New Year and prayed for the ancestors and traditional deities to grant the wishes of the Ga State.
He emphasised that there was only one Ga State and one Ghana and urged the youth to conduct themselves responsibly because they would ultimately inherit the city and its traditional institutions.
The Mayor encouraged the youth to avoid harmful substances and other activities that could negatively affect their future and the development of the Ga State.
