The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) is urging residents in parts of Greater Accra to store enough water ahead of a major maintenance exercise aimed at improving water supply across the region.
The company says it will begin replacing damaged sections of key transmission pipelines transporting water from Kpone to Tema over the weekend as part of efforts to reduce water losses and improve supply to consumers.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, GWL’s Communications Manager, Stanley Martey, said the company would issue an official public notice before the maintenance works commence.
“We had to engage our fabrication unit so they could work on the 21-inch and 24-inch pipelines. We identified some weak portions that need to be replaced. That is what is going to happen over the weekend,” he said.
Mr Martey explained that inspections uncovered extensive leakages and damaged sections along the transmission lines, significantly reducing the volume of water reaching consumers.
According to him, some of the damaged sections were difficult to detect because they pass through bushy areas, while illegal connections by some farmers had also contributed to the water losses.
He expressed optimism that replacing the damaged sections would significantly improve water supply to Greater Accra.
“Because we are going to change all the weak portions of the pipelines, we can improve water supply. If about 90% of the water gets to Accra, we will be in a much better position,” he said.
Mr Martey therefore appealed to residents in affected areas to heed the company’s advisory by storing enough water ahead of the maintenance exercise, which is scheduled to begin over the weekend.
