Residents of Sefwi Sayerano in the Western North Region on Tuesday blocked a major road in protest after a police operation in the community allegedly left two people dead and two others injured.
The unrest reportedly erupted after officers from the Sefwi Wiawso Divisional Police Command stormed the community to arrest a suspected drug peddler.
According to residents, some community members attempted to resist the arrest, leading to a confrontation during which the police allegedly opened fire.
The shooting is said to have claimed the lives of two individuals on the spot, while two others sustained gunshot wounds and fractures and have since been rushed to a health facility for treatment.
Residents also claim that another person is missing and fear the individual may have been caught in the shooting.
Angered by the incident, residents blocked the road through the community, bringing traffic to a standstill and demanding justice for the victims.
One of the bodies has been deposited at a morgue, while the other remained in the community at the time of filing this report.
Speaking to Adom News, a resident, Okyeame Kwaku Ortiz, condemned what he described as the police’s poor handling of the operation and called on authorities to investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
“We are disappointed in the police. This should not have happened, and we want justice for those who have lost their lives,” he said.
The Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the incident as investigations continue.
