Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to begin preparations for the Black Stars’ next FIFA World Cup campaign with a clear long-term plan.

The four-time African champions’ journey ended in the Round of 32 following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia with Jhon Arias scoring the only goal in the 14th minute.

Speaking on Joy Sports, Kingston, who currently coaches Uganda’s U17 national team, said the GFA should establish a long-term project to build a competitive squad for the next World Cup.

He believes such an approach would ensure continuity and reduce the need to recruit players at the last minute.

“We need a long-term project to build a team. At least five years for a coach to build a team before a tournament,” he said.

The former Black Stars winger argued that the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations should serve as a platform to develop a competitive squad, arguing that Ghana is not yet in a position to realistically target the title.

“We shouldn’t be thinking about winning the AFCON because we do not have a team,” he added.

The Black Stars will now shift their attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in September, as they look to build on their World Cup campaign and secure a place at the continental tournament.
