Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has arrived at the Accra High Court ahead of proceedings in the Samreboi concession case involving him and his company, Akonta Mining Limited.
The court is expected today, July 20, 2026, to determine whether to deliver judgment in the case, which involves allegations of unauthorised mining activities on the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.
The matter follows months of legal proceedings involving Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining Limited, who are facing charges related to alleged illegal mining activities. They have denied the allegations.
The expected judgment comes after the court last month granted Wontumi’s new lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, additional time to file a written address in support of the defence’s case.
However, the defence has since filed an application seeking to suspend the delivery of judgment, arguing that a constitutional interpretation case currently before the Supreme Court could have implications for the matter.
Mr Atta Akyea has urged the High Court to stay proceedings until the Supreme Court determines the constitutional issues raised in the application.
The lawyer has also informed the court that he is currently outside the country and is expected to return on Wednesday, July 22.
The High Court is therefore expected to first decide whether to proceed with the scheduled judgment or grant the defence’s request for an adjournment pending the Supreme Court’s decision.
The case reached the judgment stage after both the prosecution and the defence concluded presenting their arguments.
