Lawyer for detained nurse Salomey Baffoe, Enoch Afoakwa, says he has limited access to his client, who he claims has repeatedly complained of feeling unwell while in custody.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Afoakwa said he can only communicate with Salomey from the counter because she remains in the cell.
“I still don’t have proper access to her because she is in cell and I can only talk to her from the counter,” he said.
According to him, Salomey has consistently complained about her health and was visibly unwell when she appeared in court.
“She keeps saying she is not feeling well. Even the day we went to court, she said she was dizzy, and the judge ordered a swivel chair to be brought for her,” he recalled.
Mr Afoakwa said, “Given that Salomey has pleaded not guilty to the charge against her, he expected the court to consider her health when issuing the remand order.”
“The law states that someone is innocent until proven guilty. So once she has pleaded not guilty and is not feeling well, we were expecting that the court, during the orders for the remand, would have given consequential orders for her to seek medical care,” he stated.
The lawyer expressed concern about what could happen to his client while in custody, warning that the state and the court could be held accountable if her condition deteriorates.
“So if anything happens to her, we would hold the court and the government accountable,” he added.
