Leader of the United Party (UP), Alan Kyerematen, has explained that the limited time between his resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the 2024 general election influenced his decision to contest the polls under the Movement for Change.
According to him, establishing a fully-fledged political party within the available timeframe would have been impractical, despite his decision to pursue a political path outside the NPP.
Mr Kyerematen resigned from the NPP on September 25, 2023, after years of association with the party, and went on to contest the December 2024 presidential election under the Movement for Change.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, he said the Movement for Change provided the political platform needed to participate in the election while advancing the principles and ideas he believed in.
He explained that although the movement was not structured as a conventional political party at the time, its underlying philosophy was more important to his political ambitions.
“When I left the NPP, the time was too short for me to organise a full political party but to be able still to show up in the general election, obviously, you needed some kind of vehicle and within the context of political party legislation, you either go as a party or as a political organisation which in my case was the Movement for Change.
He said the movement therefore became the vehicle through which he could pursue his political objectives and participate in the election.
“But you see, the important thing was about the principle underpinning that political vehicle, which was the Movement for Change.”
