The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Ghana, Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam, has shared a dramatic account of how President John Mahama narrowly avoided being on board the military helicopter that crashed on Wednesday, claiming the lives of top government and military officials.
According to Rev. Wengam, many people have since called and messaged him, thanking the church for “saving the President’s life.”
He, however, downplayed the praise, explaining that nothing extraordinary was done except responding to a strong conviction to act.
He recounted that about a week before the incident, he received a call from the President’s Secretary, Dr. Callistus Mahama, informing him that the President would not be able to attend a planned church programme because he had been invited to Côte d’Ivoire as a special guest for their Independence Day celebration.
Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and First Lady Lordina Mahama were to attend the church event instead.
Rev. Wengam said the news left him uneasy. “I called Reverend Bawa and told him I didn’t accept the change in plan. I asked him to gather the prayer team and pray about it. I was very clear about that,” he recalled.
On Monday, matters became tense. He said the First Lady called him, sounding upset, insisting that the President should attend the programme as planned.
“She was firm she told me not to accept his absence. We went back and forth on the phone. It was almost a battle of wills,” he said.
While still on the line with the First Lady, the President himself tried calling him. “I told her I would hang up and speak with him.
The President explained his reasons, and I told him, ‘Your Excellency, I understand your will be done,” Rev. Wengam recounted.
Later, while leading a prayer session, he missed another call from the First Lady.
She followed up with a text message confirming that they would attend the programme on Wednesday and that the President could travel to Côte d’Ivoire the following day instead.
Reflecting on the twist of events, Rev. Wengam said, “If the President had come on the original date, he would have travelled the day before the crash. This change in schedule spared him.”
He concluded with a message to pastors, stressing the importance of constant prayer. “Being prophetic comes from a life of deep prayer—not praying only when you have a sermon to preach, but making it a daily commitment,” he urged.
