Ghanaian music icon Reggie Rockstone has reflected on his early life and entry into the music industry, revealing that financial hardship was not part of his childhood experience.
The veteran musician said he grew up in a financially comfortable home, where his father strongly supported his interest in music.
Speaking on a podcast on September 12, 2026, Reggie Rockstone explained that his father’s support went beyond encouragement, as he even built a recording studio for him and his siblings.
He said his relatively privileged upbringing meant he had access to most of what he needed while growing up.
“My story is uniquely different from a lot. I always say that I didn’t suffer. Growing up, we were financially stable. My dad was so proud of his son, so I got whatever I wanted,” he said.
According to Reggie, the challenges he faced in pursuing music emerged mainly while he was abroad, where he had to compete with several aspiring rappers trying to establish themselves in a growing music scene.
He said he returned to Ghana with what he described as the “dadabee flex,” but his experience overseas had exposed him to the realities and difficulties of trying to break into the industry.
“When I came back home from abroad, I brought the dadabee flex to the house. The time I suffered in the music industry was when I was abroad,” he stated.
Reggie also recalled how fierce competition was at the time, particularly as rap music was gaining popularity and many young musicians were seeking opportunities to become recognised artistes.
“At that time, I was new to the industry and the competition wasn’t easy. Rap was so productive and everyone wanted to be a rapper,” he recounted.
He disclosed that he was sometimes kept backstage while established musicians took the stage, an experience he described as part of the process that shaped his career.
“I was always left backstage when the big artistes were performing on stage,” he said.
Despite those experiences, Reggie Rockstone described his musical journey as meaningful and necessary, although he maintained that his story should not be portrayed as one of severe financial hardship.
“After all of this, it’s a beautiful journey; it’s necessary, but just that I can’t say about the hardship because I didn’t go through that,” he added.
