Veteran Ghanaian wheelchair racer Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe says his participation in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games was driven not only by the desire to represent Ghana but also by a desire to honour the confidence and unwavering support shown to para athletes by NPC Ghana President and African Paralympic Committee President, Samson Deen.
Speaking after competing in the Men’s T54 1500m final, Nkegbe described Deen as one of the few leaders who have consistently believed in the potential of Ghana’s para athletes and invested in creating opportunities for them to compete on the international stage.
According to Nkegbe, every member of Team Ghana carried a sense of responsibility to justify the trust placed in them by the NPC Ghana leadership, adding that their performances were also a tribute to those who continue to champion the growth of para sports despite limited resources.
The experienced Paralympian stressed that sustained investment in athletes, quality preparation and institutional support remain the key ingredients for winning medals at major international competitions. He called for broader national support from government, corporate Ghana and other stakeholders to complement the efforts of the National Paralympic Committee.
Nkegbe’s remarks come as Ghana’s para athletes continue to draw praise for their performances at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the team demonstrating resilience and determination as they fly the nation’s flag on the international stage.
