The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested 10 suspects for allegedly engaging in the distribution of cannabis and cannabis-infused drinks during the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) SRC Week celebrations.
The suspects, comprising nine males and one female, were apprehended on Friday night following an intelligence-led operation by NACOC officers who had gathered information on suspected drug-related activities on the university campus.
According to NACOC, the operation led to the seizure of suspected cannabis and several consumable products believed to have been infused with the narcotic.
Items retrieved included wraps of suspected cannabis, cups of “abele” ice cream, bottles of pineapple juice, sobolo drinks, fresh palm wine and other beverages.
The Commission said preliminary field tests conducted on the seized items confirmed the presence of cannabis, raising suspicions that the products were being distributed to students and other participants during the celebrations.
The 10 suspects are currently assisting with investigations as NACOC works to determine the extent of the alleged operation and identify other persons who may be connected to the activity.
NACOC has reaffirmed its commitment to preventing drug-related activities in educational institutions and urged students and members of the public to report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
