President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport.
The project is expected to provide approximately 2,030 covered parking bays, as well as commercial, entertainment and hospitality facilities, as part of efforts to expand airport infrastructure and improve the passenger experience.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, President Mahama said the government’s vision extends beyond increasing passenger numbers to positioning Ghana as a preferred destination, convenient transit point and competitive aviation hub in Africa.
He said passenger traffic at the airport had increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, making the expansion of airport infrastructure necessary to meet growing demand.
President Mahama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening aviation infrastructure and improving connectivity while urging players in the sector to uphold professionalism, discipline and courtesy.
He further disclosed that several ongoing airport development projects are being financed entirely from the balance sheets of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), without direct government funding.
The projects include the construction of a new GCAA control tower, refurbishment of Terminal 2, development of a transfer concourse connecting Terminals 2 and 3, and the new parking and commercial complex at Terminal 3.
The President said the investments form part of broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s aviation infrastructure and enhance the country’s position as a major aviation hub in Africa.
