The Accra Regional Commander of Police, DCOP Patrick Sarpong, has called on politicians to leave security work to the appropriate agencies in the country.

Testifying at the Justice Short Commission of Inquiry on the Aywaso West Wuogon by-election violence, DCOP Sarpong bemoaned political interference in the work of the police.

“Politicians should do politics and allow the police to do our security work without interference. When politicians are in government, they trust the police because they have control over the police but when in opposition, they become apprehensive with the work of the police,” he said.

DCOP Sarpong also urged political parties to adhere to the call of the IGP David Asante Apeatu when he addressed the media on vigilantism in the country.

“The greatest solution to end vigilantism is for political parties to listen to the call of the IGP. They should be able to disband or deal with vigilante groups as they ought to in the country,” he added.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), David Asante Apeatu directed political parties to denounce vigilante groups who claim allegiance to them with immediate effect.

According to the IGP, it was against the country’s laws for political parties to have such groups that have recently been disturbing the peace of the country.

The police have come under pressure for not acting tough on these groups but addressing the media in Accra Thursday, Mr Apeatu declared a “zero tolerance against political violence and vigilantism.”
