The Ghana Police Service has foiled a planned robbery operation and recovered a cache of weapons following an intelligence-led operation at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region.
The coordinated exercise, carried out by the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Department in collaboration with the Ashanti North Regional Police Command, targeted a 23-year-old suspect, Ali Mohammed, believed to be behind a series of violent robberies and a murder case.
According to a police statement, the operation was conducted on June 2, 2026, after intelligence indicated the suspect’s location.
Police say Mohammed was wanted in connection with the shooting and killing of Dominic Frimpong on the Akyiresu–Kwame Dwomo Sreso road on April 12, 2026. He was also linked to two separate robbery incidents on the Bosomkyekye stretch of the Mampong–Ejura road in July 2025 and February 2026, which resulted in the death of a driver’s mate.
During the operation, officers reportedly came under fire after the suspect opened fire with an AK-47 rifle.
“During the operation at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region, the suspect engaged the police with an AK-47 rifle but he was overpowered and sustained gunshot injuries,” the statement said.
He was transported to the Goaso Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
A subsequent search at the scene led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a pump-action gun, two AK-47 magazines, nine rounds of ammunition, three mobile phones, a motorbike ignition key, a black nose mask, four talismans, and a sack.
The Police say investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the suspected robbery syndicate who are still on the run.
The suspects being pursued have been named as Omar Chad, Dauda Tahidu, Suley, and others believed to be at large.
Authorities have urged members of the public to assist with information that could lead to their arrest as efforts continue to dismantle the network.
