A 14-year-old boy has died after drowning in a dam at Samni a village near Nalerigu/Gambaga in East Mamprusi Municipality of the Northern Region.

The victim, whose name was given as Alhassan Arisu was said to have gone swimming with his friends at an abandoned dam reportedly meant for government’s ‘One Village One Dam’ project.

Alhassan Arisu met his untimely death when he slipped into the shallow part of the dam around 6: 30pm Sunday.

Adom News’ Illiasu Abdul Rauf reported that, after the news got to the community, men and women in the village begun to search for him in the dam.

He said the young boy died after he was rescued by residents in the town.

According to the residents, this is the second time such an incident has happened in the community.

The body has since been buried as custom demands.

Meanwhile the Municipal Chief Executive of the East Mamprusi Abdul Nasir Danladi describing the incident as unfortunate said contractors were forced to stop working because of the rains.

That notwithstanding, he said work will soon resume.
