Former Ghana Football Association Vice President Fred Pappoe has hailed Michael Essien as the greatest player Ghana has ever produced, citing his remarkable club career and influence on the global stage.

Essien, who began his rise at Liberty Professionals, quickly established himself as one of the finest talents to emerge from Ghana’s domestic league.

His early move to Europe saw him feature for Stade Brestois 29 before gaining prominence at Olympique Lyonnais, where his performances attracted widespread attention.

The former midfielder’s career reached new heights following his transfer to Chelsea FC, where he enjoyed a trophy-laden spell and cemented his reputation as one of the world’s elite midfielders.

He later had stints at Real Madrid CF and AC Milan, further enhancing his legacy.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Pappoe acknowledged Essien’s achievements while also recognising the contributions of Asamoah Gyan.

“I will say Michael Essien. Looking at how he rose and the clubs he played for, they are incredible and have the impact he made,” he said.

“Even though his days with the national team were up and down for me, it would be Essien.

“Asamoah Gyan was a good goalscorer in terms of the World Cup, and so in terms of goalscoring, Gyan will be my best player, but Essien remains my best player,” Mr Pappoe added.

Essien represented Ghana at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup, earning 59 caps and scoring nine goals for the Black Stars.

Now retired from playing, the former midfielder has transitioned into coaching and currently serves as an assistant coach at Danish side FC Nordsjælland.
