The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned the alleged sexual abuse of a female student by the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, calling for a swift and impartial investigation into the matter.
In a press statement, NUGS described the allegation as deeply troubling, stressing that school authorities have a responsibility to protect students rather than expose them to harm.
The union said the incident highlights a broader concern about sexual harassment, intimidation, and the abuse of authority faced by female students in senior high schools and tertiary institutions.
It stressed that no student should be subjected to such treatment in the pursuit of education.
NUGS has therefore called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and relevant investigative authorities to investigate the allegation thoroughly and ensure that the affected student receives the necessary counselling and support.
It further urged authorities to protect the student’s identity and dignity throughout the investigative process and prevent any form of intimidation or victimisation.
The union said the headmaster should face prosecution if investigations establish that the allegation is true.
“Nobody should be above the law because of their position or office,” the statement said, adding that administrative sanctions should not replace criminal prosecution where criminal conduct has been established.
NUGS also called on the GES and tertiary institutions to strengthen mechanisms for reporting sexual abuse and ensure that students can report misconduct without fear of retaliation.
It emphasised that complaints of sexual misconduct must be taken seriously and addressed promptly to protect students and promote accountability within educational institutions.
The union expressed solidarity with the affected student and others who have experienced sexual harassment or abuse, including those who have remained silent for fear of speaking out.
It maintained that schools and universities must remain safe environments where students are treated with dignity, respect and protected from abuse.
