New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Women’s Organiser, Mavis Hawa Koomson, says the party’s women’s wing will seek a formal pact with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to guarantee greater representation for women should he win the 2028 presidential election.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Madam Koomson said unlike what she described as previous verbal assurances, the commitment to women’s inclusion under a future Bawumia administration would be backed by a formal agreement.

“NDC made the promise, but there was no binding document. It was just a verbal assurance. So that will be the difference with us. We will sign the pact with Dr Bawumia,” she said.

She explained that the pact would specifically address women’s representation in Dr Bawumia’s proposed 10 appointments per constituency initiative.

According to Madam Koomson, the women’s wing would seek clear commitments on how many of the appointments would be allocated to women and would monitor delivery of that promise.

“He has already promised that when elected as president in 2028, in every constituency, he will give 10 appointments,” she said.

“So we would ask how many of these appointments will go to women. It’s as simple as ABC, and we would make sure he delivers,” she added.

Madam Koomson said ensuring women have a meaningful voice in government would be a priority.

“We must make sure the voices of women will be heard,” she said.

Her comments also touched on the recent NPP national executive elections, where two women contested for national executive positions but were unsuccessful.

She said she was disappointed by the outcome and had hoped at least one of the women would have joined her in the party’s national leadership.

“I was sad and pained that the women who contested the recent NPP national executive elections didn’t win,” she said.

“They were just two, and I was hoping that at least one of them would join me because when women are in charge, they do things and do it well,” she added.

Madam Koomson, however, said she remained confident that the party’s leadership would take steps to ensure more women are brought into key positions.

“But I know leadership is putting in place measures for us to get some women on board to work with,” she said.
