The Nkwanta South Municipality has launched a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education initiative, becoming the first municipality in the Oti Region to roll out a structured STEM programme.

The initiative, aimed at strengthening foundational learning and equipping students with relevant 21st-century skills, was officially launched at Shiare M/A Basic School.

The choice of Shiare was described as strategic due to its role as a tourism hub and its accessibility to residents in eight surrounding communities.

The event also featured the donation of school uniforms to support learners and promote school attendance.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Joseph Awal Antwi, said education remains a key pillar of government’s development agenda.

He explained that the STEM initiative is designed to equip students with skills in ICT, mathematics and science to foster innovation, problem-solving and career readiness.

Mr. Antwi urged students to take full advantage of the programme and the learning resources provided.

He also revealed plans by the municipality to establish five additional STEM centres to expand access to more communities.

The Municipal Education Director, Jonathan Kossinah, highlighted the strategic importance of Shiare, noting its suitability as a central learning point for nearby communities.

He assured that qualified teachers have been deployed, with a strong focus on practical laboratory work and hands-on learning to enhance understanding and build confidence among students.

The initiative, together with plans for expansion, is expected to significantly improve educational outcomes and prepare learners in Nkwanta South for future workforce demands.
