The Nkwanta South District Assembly in the Oti Region has emerged as the second-best-performing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly (MMDA) in Ghana in the 2025 Public Financial Management Compliance League Table (PFMCLT), despite challenges relating to peace and security in the area.
The recognition was announced during the launch of the third edition of the Public Financial Management Compliance League Table by the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) in Accra.
The Bia East District Assembly secured the top position, while the Asokwa Municipal Assembly placed third. Other assemblies that made it into the top 10 include Krachi Nchumuru District Assembly (4th), North Tongu District Assembly (5th), South Dayi District Assembly (6th), Asante Akyem Central Municipal Assembly (7th), Adansi South District Assembly (8th), Jasikan Municipal Assembly (9th) and Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly (10th).
Speaking to Adom News after receiving the award, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, Joseph Awal Antwi, described the achievement as a testament to the Assembly’s commitment to prudent financial management and good governance.
“Moving from the 261st position in 2024 to the second-best-performing assembly in Ghana in 2025 shows the amount of hard work we have put in. We are proud of this achievement, but we will not relent. Our target is to become number one next year,” he said.
Mr Antwi expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the opportunity to serve the people of Nkwanta South, assuring residents that the Assembly would continue to improve service delivery and strengthen accountability.
“The difference between us and the first-placed assembly was just one point. We believe with more hard work and dedication, we will return stronger and claim the top spot next year,” he added.
The MCE also appealed to residents to maintain peace and coexist peacefully, stressing that unity remains essential for the district’s development.
“I urge all residents to let peace prevail and avoid tribal conflicts. A peaceful environment is key to attracting development and improving the lives of our people,” he stated.
He further commended the Assembly’s staff for their dedication and teamwork, noting that the award was a result of their collective efforts. The top three performing assemblies received laptops and plaques, while other recognised assemblies were presented with plaques.
The Public Financial Management Compliance League Table (PFMCLT) is an annual assessment by the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) that evaluates MMDAs based on their compliance with public financial management laws, revenue mobilisation, budgeting, financial reporting and the efficient use of public resources.
The launch brought together key stakeholders, including former Deputy Minister for Finance Abena Osei-Asare, representatives of the European Union, members of Parliament’s Select Committee on Local Government, civil society organisations and development partners, where the top 10 performing MMDAs were honoured for their outstanding performance.
