Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari has spoken out against domestic violence and the abuse of children in the home.
In a post on X, she said home should be a place where children feel safe, protected and loved, but noted that for many children, it has instead become a source of fear.
She stressed that domestic violence involving children goes beyond a family dispute and constitutes abuse that should not be ignored.
“When they are hit too, the harm is even deeper. They learn that home is not safe and that the people who should protect them can hurt them.”
Nadia Buari explained that domestic violence can take several forms, including physical, emotional, verbal, sexual and financial abuse, adding that children exposed to such environments may experience fear, anxiety, guilt, anger, sleep difficulties, withdrawal or behavioural changes.
She urged victims not to remain in abusive situations hoping that things would change.
“Abuse rarely stops without help. Apologies and promises do not erase violence.”
She further cautioned against staying in abusive relationships for the sake of children, arguing that such situations could teach children that violence is normal.
According to her, marriage, cultural expectations or fear of public opinion should never be used as reasons to tolerate abuse.
“Love is not fear.”
She encouraged victims and those who witness signs of domestic violence to act, seek help, report through the appropriate channels and prioritise the safety of themselves and their children.
