Police have arrested the Chairman of the People’s National Convention, and 16 others for taking part in a march against the Togolese government.
Bernard Mornah, Irbid Ibrahim, a security analyst and a host of others were picked up around 8:00 am at the Kawukudi Park in Accra during the walk Saturday morning.
Joy News’ Charles Aryittey said the arrested persons were being interrogated by the Nima Police when he got there.
The police will not make any public comment on the matter except to say a statement will soon be issued.
The arrested persons are part of the Ghana-Togo solidarity movement set up to provide support for opposition members in Togo and to protest what they claim to human right abuses in the West African country.
Togo has been a harbinger for violence in recent weeks after opposition parties organized demonstrations in protest of the eternal stay of the Gnassingbe family in power.
There are groups in Ghana solidarising with the opposition parties, one of which is the Ghana-Togo solidarity movement.
The group had earlier sought permission from the police to provide security for the walk but the police declined with the explanation they had personnel and resource constraints.
The group then decided to go ahead with the walk, nonetheless.
According to Bernard Mornah, they were picked up in Rambo-style manner by armed police men just when the walk was about to begin.
He quickly got in touch with his lawyer, Raymond Atuguba to inform him about the turn of events.
His lawyer has written to the police demanding explanation for the arrest of his client.
The letter, a copy of which has been intercepted by Myjoyonline.com inquired as follows;

  1. Whether or not our client Bernard Anbataayela Mornah is in the custody of the Nima Police Station, any of the affiliates of that Police station, or any office or worker or affiliate or agent of that police station.
  2. Whether or not our client has been discharged with any offence(s) and if so what offence(s).
  3. Whether or not our client will be granted bail, and if so on what day and time.
  4. Whether or not our client will be put before a court of law and if so on what day, time and at which court?

It is not clear yet what the Police intends to do.
