President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his administration will undertake further reshuffles as part of efforts to strengthen government performance and align appointments with its governance priorities.

Addressing residents during the Reset Tour and citizens’ engagement in the Volta Region on Friday, the President assured party members and individuals aspiring to serve in government that more opportunities would become available as his administration progresses.

“There’ll be reshuffles and reshuffles and reshuffles, so just stand in readiness. Who knows, your turn will come and you’ll be invited to serve,” he said.

The President’s comments are expected to heighten speculation about possible changes within the executive following appointments made since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office.

Defending his administration’s decision to maintain a lean government, President Mahama said measures introduced since taking office were aimed at reducing public expenditure while improving efficiency.

According to him, the number of presidential staff, advisers and other officials attached to the Presidency has been reduced from about 300 to just over 200.

“We’ve kept it lean and mean and that is how we’re able to cut down some of the waste,” he stated.

President Mahama also said his administration had fulfilled its promise to reduce the size of government by limiting the number of ministers to 60.

He noted that several ministries, as well as all regional ministerial offices, are operating without deputy ministers as part of efforts to reduce the cost of governance without affecting the effective delivery of public services.

The President said the downsized government reflects a key campaign promise made ahead of the 2024 general election to cut public spending and redirect resources towards national development priorities.

His latest remarks come amid growing public discussion over the possibility of changes to government appointments as the administration continues to implement its policy agenda and improve performance across ministries, departments and agencies.
