The Accra Premium Lions Club, in collaboration with Lions Clubs International, Brooklyn District 20-K1, has supported more than 500 pupils of the Reverend Father Henry Roman Catholic Basic School at Obom in the Greater Accra Region with educational materials and free health screening.
The initiative, organised under the club’s “Touching Lives Through Service” programme, was aimed at supporting the educational development, health and general well-being of children in underserved communities.
The pupils received books, pens, pencils, shoes, and medicated lenses, while also benefiting from free health screening and eye examinations.
Speaking in an interview, Immediate Past President of the Accra Premium Lions Club, Lucy Gyata, said the club was motivated by the need to provide practical support to children to enhance their learning and well-being.
“We decided to support these pupils with some essential educational and health-related items because we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a conducive environment and have access to basic healthcare,” she said.
According to her, the initiative was part of the club’s broader commitment to touching lives through meaningful community service.
“Under our ‘Touching Lives Through Service’ programme, we want to make a positive and lasting impact in the lives of children, particularly those in communities where such support is needed most,” Ms Gyata added.
The event brought together members of the Accra Premium Lions Club and Lions Clubs International, Brooklyn District 20-K1, who spent time with the pupils as part of their commitment to community service and humanitarian activities.
Health professionals from the Greater Accra Regional Hospital and Empatcaiquo also participated in the programme, conducting health screenings and eye examinations for the pupils.
The intervention is expected to provide both immediate relief and long-term benefits to the beneficiaries, particularly through improved access to educational materials and early identification of health and eye-related conditions.
On behalf of the school and the beneficiaries, Reverend Father Paul Ebo Quarshie expressed appreciation to the Lions Club for the gesture.
He said the donation and health intervention would contribute significantly to improving the lives and educational prospects of the pupils.
“We are very grateful to the Accra Premium Lions Club and all their partners for coming to support our children. This intervention means a lot to the school and the pupils,” Rev. Fr. Quarshie said.
He noted that the educational materials would help ease some of the challenges faced by pupils and support them in their studies.
“The educational items will go a long way towards supporting the children in their learning, while the health screening will also help identify and address health concerns that could affect their education,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, Ormond Brathwaite of Lions District 20-K1 reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to extending its humanitarian activities to more communities.
He said the Lions would continue to implement initiatives designed to improve the well-being of children and vulnerable people.
“Our commitment is to continue to touch more lives through sustainable humanitarian projects. We believe that by working together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of people, particularly children and vulnerable groups,” Mr Brathwaite said.
He added that the organisation would continue to identify communities where its interventions could make a lasting impact.
“We will continue to look for opportunities to extend our service to more communities and support initiatives that improve the health, education, and general well-being of the people,” he said.
The initiative at Obom forms part of the Lions’ broader service efforts aimed at improving lives through education, healthcare, and community development.
