Metro Mass to receive 350 mini buses, 100 Coaster buses and 50 cargo trucks

Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) is to take delivery of 350 Toyota Hiace minibuses, 100 Toyota Coaster buses, and 50 cargo trucks by the end of 2025.

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari-Nikpe, announced this at the Government Accountability Series press briefing in Accra on Wednesday.

The minister said MMTL was in distress and needed urgent support to restore efficiency.

“The current state of Metro Mass Transit Limited and Intercity STC, as I stated, is that they are in distress and they need financial support,” Mr. Bukari-Nikpe said.

He explained that the new buses formed part of the government’s plan to revive the operations of both MMTL and STC.

The gradual delivery of the vehicles, he said, would begin at the close of this year and continue into 2026 to expand services across the regions.

Mr Bukari-Nikpe noted that over the years, parts of STC’s operations had been ceded to private firms, limiting revenue generation by the state.

He said the government was taking steps to reclaim some of those contracts to restore functions to the company.

“The private sector is making the revenue now, not those state-owned enterprises. We are far advanced to see how we can take back some of those contracts and allow the STC and Metro Mass to generate the needed revenue,” he said.

According to the minister, the renewed fleet and restructuring plans are expected to improve passenger services, strengthen financial performance, and reconnect the two companies with their mandate of providing affordable and reliable mass transport for Ghanaians.
