The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has urged traders operating in the Central Business District (CBD) to sweep their immediate surroundings every hour to help sustain cleanliness in the capital.
He said the directive was necessary to ensure that the gains made through the monthly National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise are maintained throughout the month.
The Mayor made the call on Saturday, September 5, 2026, when he inspected the September NSD exercise with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.
The inspection began at the Kinbu Traffic Light and continued through Tudu and other principal streets within the Accra metropolis.
The exercise was aimed at assessing compliance by traders and businesses with the sanitation exercise while encouraging them to maintain the level of cleanliness achieved.
Addressing traders at Tudu, Mr Allotey said the NSD initiative had come to stay but stressed that keeping Accra clean should not be limited to the first Saturday of every month.
He urged traders to take responsibility for the cleanliness of their operating areas by sweeping regularly and removing litter throughout the day.
According to the Mayor, sweeping every hour would prevent waste from accumulating in the busy commercial district and contribute to a cleaner and healthier Accra.
He further encouraged businesses and residents to make regular cleaning a daily responsibility rather than relying solely on periodic sanitation exercises.
