A tremendous performance from Leeds United saw them deservedly win at Old Trafford for the first time since 1981, Noah Okafor’s early double sending them six points clear of the relegation zone with just six games to go,
Manchester United had not played in 24 days and it showed – they were sluggish and disorganised just as Leeds were aggressive and grooved, and fully deserved to fall two goals behind, Okafor notching after five and 29 minutes.
The home side did improve a little thereafter but, on 56 minutes, Lisandro Martinez was sent off having pulled Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. They did, though, halve the deficit, Casemiro heading home a Bruno Fernandes cross, but struggled to create enough to level, Benjamin Sesko having a header saved and Calvert-Lewin clearing off the line from Leny Yoro.
Results over the weekend mean that this result is not a disaster for Michael Carrick’s side, who remain third in the table and seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea – who they face at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
