A 22-year-old man was shot and killed when an argument with his father over who should walk their pet dog escalated into a gunfight, police said.
Officers were called to a shooting in Chicago’s Burnside area, near the 9100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue, at around 8.20am on Sunday (9 April).
The man, 43, and his son were found with multiple gunshot wounds after authorities said a “verbal altercation” turned violent.
Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that the fight between the two men was over “who was going to walk the dog” and that both men shot at each other.
The pair were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where the 22-year-old was pronounced dead.
His father is currently in a critical condition, the Chicago Tribune reported. The identities of the two men have not yet been released.
Police say two weapons were recovered from the scene and officers continue to investigate.
In 2016, Chicago suffered its deadliest year in two decades in terms of homicides, with 762 reported killings in total – an average of two a day. The same year saw 3,550 shooting incidents – a rise of 1,100 from 2015 – and 4,331 shooting victims, according to the Chicago Police Department.
Since Friday, six people have been killed and 22 others injured in shootings across the city, the Chicago Sun Times reported.
