One of the eyewitnesses to the Makola fire outbreak, Collins Cobbinah, has alleged that the inferno may have been triggered by a thunderstorm.

Narrating the incident to Adom News reporter Kwame Kulenu a day after the fire, he claimed that lightning struck an electric cable, sparking the blaze.

He said once the cable caught fire, smoke was seen coming from one of the shops in the area.

Mr. Cobbinah added that residents managed to call the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to the scene, but they arrived late.

He further argued that if firefighters had responded promptly, the inferno could have been contained before it escalated.

He also noted that some traders who had their goods outside were able to salvage them, while those whose items were inside the shops lost everything to the fire.
