Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona has taken over as the new Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

This was at a handing-over ceremony held at the forecourt of the Odartey-Wellington Block of the Ghana Army Headquarters (AHQ), Burma Camp in Accra on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

It was presided over by the Deputy Minister for Defence and Member of Parliament for Atwima-Kwanwoma, Kofi Amankwa-Manu.

He takes over from Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, who has been appointed the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

Major General Onwona until his elevation was the Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC).

Major General Oppong-Peprah in his farewell speech expressed gratitude to President Nana Akufo-Addo who doubles as the Commander-in-Chief of GAF for the confidence reposed in him by appointing him as the Army Commander.

He appreciated all personnel including civilians for their support and prayers which made the great strides during his tenure possible.

Major Oppong-Peprah was hopeful the same support and prayers would be extended to his successor.

In a show of appreciation to the former COAS for his development and expansion, the Army Headquarters presented a citation, 5.0 Horsepower Air Conditioner and other gifts.
