President John Dramani Mahama has presented replacement vehicles to the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Thomas Oppong-Peprah (Rtd), and former Service Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) following the withdrawal of armoured vehicles earlier allocated to them as part of their retirement benefits.
In a Facebook post on Monday, August 3, the GAF said the retired military leaders received Toyota Land Cruisers from the President.
The vehicles were handed over on behalf of President Mahama by the current Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, at a ceremony held at the General Headquarters of the GAF in Accra on Friday, July 31, 2026.
According to the GAF, the presentation fulfils a commitment made by President Mahama after the armoured vehicles previously assigned to the retired commanders were withdrawn.
The President had pledged to provide alternative vehicles in recognition of the years of dedicated service and contributions of the former military leaders to Ghana’s national security.
Speaking at the ceremony, Lt. Gen. William Agyapong commended the retired commanders for their sacrifices and commitment to the growth and development of the Ghana Armed Forces.
He also highlighted ongoing initiatives within the military, including infrastructure development, welfare programmes and efforts to strengthen the operational capacity of the GAF.
Former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe (Rtd), who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed appreciation to President Mahama for fulfilling his promise.
He described the gesture as a reflection of the government’s recognition of the contributions of retired military personnel and praised the leadership of the GAF for implementing reforms aimed at improving the welfare of personnel and enhancing the effectiveness of the Armed Forces.
