President John Dramani Mahama has extended his condolences to families who lost loved ones and those affected by Monday’s devastating floods, describing the disaster as deeply distressing and assuring victims of government’s support.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Tema Integrated Industrial Park (TIIP), the President said the heavy rainfall had caused widespread destruction across several parts of the country, with some people still unaccounted for as search and recovery operations continue.
“Unfortunately, we cannot account for a certain number of our citizens. I wish to extend my sympathies to the families that have people missing and to the many who have lost property or been injured as a result of the flooding,” he said.
President Mahama explained that the flooding was triggered by an extreme weather event, with parts of southern Ghana recording about 140 millimetres of rainfall within a 24-hour period.
According to him, the sheer volume of rainfall overwhelmed existing drainage systems, leading to severe flooding across Accra and other coastal communities, including Winneba.
“One hundred and forty millimetres of water on the southern part of Ghana in a 24-hour period… however prepared you are, you cannot accept those volumes,” he stated.
The President noted that the floods had resulted in injuries, destruction of property and significant disruption to the livelihoods of many residents.
He assured affected communities that government remains committed to supporting relief and recovery efforts while emergency agencies continue search, rescue and rehabilitation operations in the hardest-hit areas.
President Mahama reiterated government’s commitment to assisting victims as the country works to recover from one of the worst flooding incidents in recent months.
