Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako says Ex-President John Dramani Mahama remains the best candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), come 2020.

According to him, there is no member of the NDC who is more qualified to lead the party into next year’s general elections.

Mr. Baako cancelled out some bigwigs whose names have popped up for the flagbearership position of the party.

The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, and Ekow Spio-Garbrah, former Minister for Trade and Industry among other names, have been mentioned as probable candidates for the party’s flagbearership.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, Kweku Baako noted that the party needs a candidate with “requisite credentials to lead the NDC into 2020” but Ex-President John Mahama remains competitive of all the NDC potential aspirants.

“First of all, he is the immediate past President. He was a Vice President. He led them into an election in 2012. They won the election, forget about the court case. At the end of the day, if there were doubts about his victory, when they sent it to court; the court validated the declaration of the EC. So, as far as I’m concerned, he won it.

“He led them to another battle in 2016 and lost in a very abysmal way but when the NDC are coming in 2020 – their campaign, even now when they attack the Akufo-Addo administration, most of the things they use to attack are things they did either under Atta Mills or John Mahama or both. What I’m saying is the track record. The track record that they will bring on the political platform to campaign more or less is intrinsically linked to John Mahama. It will be a stronger factor…Unless John Mahama decides not to run,” he said.

Mr. Baako was however quick to add that the NDC will not win the elections but to him, it is better for them to present a qualified candidate to lead the party than to present a non-marketable person.
