The Kpando Young Ladies Association (KYLA), in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) in Kpando, has marked this year’s International Menstrual Hygiene Day with an educational programme aimed at empowering young girls and breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation.

The event, held under the theme “Together for a Period-Friendly Ghana,” brought together boys and girls from various schools across the Kpando Municipality for awareness creation on menstrual hygiene management.

As part of activities marking the celebration, the association donated sanitary pads to students and organised career guidance and skills development sessions, including fashion designing and bead-making training.

The programme was attended by the President of KYLA, Jemima Osai, other members of the association, facilitators, education officials, and students.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News correspondent Odehyeba Owusu Job, Doris Sename, a member of the Kpando Young Ladies Association, encouraged young girls not to allow menstruation to affect their education, confidence, or future ambitions.

“As we celebrate International Menstrual Hygiene Day, I especially want to speak to our young girls. Menstruation is natural. It is not a sickness, and it should never stop you from going to school, participating in activities, or pursuing your dreams. Your period must never make you feel ashamed or less important,” she said.

Doris Sename stressed the importance of educating both boys and girls to help eliminate the stigma associated with menstruation and create a more supportive environment for girls in schools and communities.

She also appealed to stakeholders, parents, and educational authorities to support initiatives that improve access to sanitary products and accurate menstrual health education for young girls.

Guest speaker for the programme, Priscilla Ocloo Dzaba, urged students to take the knowledge and practical skills acquired during the event seriously.

According to her, the training would help shape them into responsible and independent individuals capable of contributing positively to their communities.

The Kpando Municipal Girl Child Coordinator, Peace Attah, together with students who participated in the programme, expressed appreciation to the organisers for what they described as a timely and impactful initiative.
