The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has opened applications for the second round of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF 2.0), inviting young people in the metropolis to submit innovative projects aimed at addressing climate change.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, said Kumasi’s participation in the programme for the third time highlights the city’s commitment to sustainable development and increasing youth involvement in climate action.
He explained that Kumasi’s selection for the 2026–2027 cycle is part of a global initiative involving 300 cities that are working to expand the role of young people in developing local solutions to climate challenges.
“Announced at the Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Innovation Studio during the COP28 UAE Local Climate Action Summit on 2nd December 2023, Kumasi’s participation for the third time in the programme marks an exciting step toward fostering a more sustainable future,” he said.
Mr Ofori Agyemang Boadi explained that the initiative targets young people between the ages of 15 and 24, who are expected to form groups and submit proposals for practical climate-related projects that can create positive change in their communities.
With support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, KMA will establish a microgrant programme to fund selected youth-led climate projects aligned with the city’s climate goals.
The proposals will be reviewed by a mayoral advisory committee, which will select the most promising projects for funding and implementation.
Under the programme, KMA will receive an initial US$50,000 from Bloomberg Philanthropies to support youth-led initiatives. Selected groups will receive microgrants ranging from US$1,000 to US$5,000 to implement projects that promote sustainable development within Kumasi.
The Assembly said eligible youth groups can download application forms from the official KMA website from July 15, 2026, and submit completed forms electronically through the Assembly’s online portal or deliver them to the Development Planning Unit by August 24, 2026.
The Mayor urged young people in Kumasi to take advantage of the opportunity to develop solutions that address climate-related challenges and contribute to building a more resilient city.
“As Mayor of Kumasi, I today announce a call for all young people aged 15 to 24, resident in Kumasi, to come together and submit project proposals on climate-related activities,” he said.
The Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund provides funding and technical support to help municipalities engage young people in designing and implementing climate solutions that align with city priorities.
Through the initiative, participating cities invite youth-led ideas, select promising projects and provide financial support to help young people execute their plans while improving public spaces, strengthening resilience and addressing environmental challenges.
KMA said the programme reflects its commitment to empowering young people to play an active role in shaping a sustainable future for Kumasi.
