The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has officially launched the first-ever Ga Mantse Tennis Open Championship at the Ga Mantse Palace in Accra as part of activities leading up to this year’s Homowo Festival.
The championship, unveiled on Thursday, July 23, is expected to combine sport, culture and community engagement while promoting youth development and sports tourism across the Ga State and Ghana.
The tournament is being organised by Genet Services, a 360-degree events, logistics and creative agency, under the direct patronage of the Ga Mantse.
Organisers say the initiative is designed to use tennis as a platform to strengthen community bonds, inspire young people and attract greater interest in sports tourism.
Speaking at the launch, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II highlighted the role of tennis in shaping the character of young people, describing the sport as a valuable tool for building discipline, resilience and strategic thinking.
The inaugural competition is scheduled to take place in August 2026 and will bring together some of Ghana’s top male and female professional tennis players. Participants will compete for championship honours, cash prizes and valuable national ranking points.
In a symbolic gesture to officially inaugurate the tournament, the Ga Mantse stepped onto the court and took part in a brief exhibition match, entertaining guests and demonstrating his support for the initiative.
The launch attracted several high-profile personalities, including Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, as well as the President of the Ghana Tennis Federation, reflecting strong institutional support for the championship.
The competition has also secured backing from corporate partners, including international sports retailer Decathlon, with organisers aiming to deliver an event that meets international standards.
The Ga Mantse Tennis Open is being staged in collaboration with the Ghana Tennis Federation, the National Sports Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Organisers believe the championship has the potential to become a permanent feature on Ghana’s sporting calendar, while helping to establish Accra as a leading destination for tennis development, grassroots participation and sports diplomacy in West Africa.
